View Full Version : Reverting the ice>Link's firmware version

First, some history...
I am all too familiar with the Dension ice>Link, but I thought I'd throw this question out here. Perhaps I'm missing something?!?! I have been successful in updating my ice>Link's firmware at least 3 times. I am also extremely versed with the ice>Link's SETUP menu, as well as changing the UI to use the iPod while plugged into the ice>Link. My ice>Link currently is running the latest firmware; version 2.B2 (the iPod reads 'ICEV22.B2' during the Dension splash screen).
Here's the question: Has anyone been able to revert back to an older version of the firmware?
I have tried to revert back to version 2.07 with zero success. I have tried every which way I know to kick off the update process, and although it "appears" to be updating like before...each time it completes, I unplug the iPod, unplug the ice>Link (thus resetting it), plug everything back in, and the firmware version is STILL 2.B2!!! http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/images/smilies/headshake.gif Argh!
I'm going to call and email Chase at Dension. Perhaps the ice>Link won't let you go back to an older version...I dunno. It's the only thing that's making sense at the moment.

Hi Joe,
Dension told me I couldn't upgrade firmware backwards. I wanted to, and they said no, no explanation, just couldn't. That's why they're sending me a new unit. Chase may have a work around.
BTW - Why are you wanting to go back - to help someone with the older version menu?
In addition, thanks for all your posts and links on the Ice Link stuff. I couldn't have got mine working without your help.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm wanting to try version 2.07 because I don't think I ever tried that version of firmware before. I have been experiencing some new lock-ups lately...with the bike just in the garage. Very strange. Oh well...I'll talk to Chase and see what's up.
I tried installing version 2.07 tonight several times and it didn't seem to take. However, after trying I played my iPod for 2 hours at a time, 2 separate times. I haven't been able to do that lately. Maybe I cured what was ailing the ice>Link tonight. Time will tell.

Hi Joe,
I think I've read everything I can about the Ice Link on this site but I'm still not sure if it's a good thing or not.....
Would you recommend it?

Just my .02 cents... I've had my Ice>link for about a year now, gone through one unit upgrade (from the original Ice>link to the 'Plus') and now at the latest 2b2 firmware version. I am glad I removed the CD changer from the right saddle bag. The new Ice>link firmware does lock up from time to time on my LT and I have to stop and reset the IPOD. My experience with the Dension folks is less than stellar.
All in all, if I had it to do over I would go with an XM radio instead.

I know you were asking Joe (Mess13), but I'll throw by 2 cents in and completely agree with Joe B.(Loveto) except for the XM Radio.
In talking with my wife we both agree 100% in the storage space gained and the quantity of music, 7 CD's just wasn't getting it, now available without a monthly subscription. Dension people are at times a bit short on their answers and not too forthcoming with suggestions, but I find that more and more typical of tech support these days, you ever tried to talk with someone at Norton Anti-Virus or use there online support? Regardless the job is getting done and I have nothing better to do in the winter months and I write it off as just another one of those learning experiences.
I'll have a more definite opinion after a summers worth of riding. The choice is yours, if you don't mind tinkering the gains are positive for me.

Hi Joe,

Would you recommend it?It depends what day you ask me. When it works, (and this IS getter better and better with each firmware upgrade), it is the greatest thing since sliced-bread. I have over 6,000 songs to my avail at any given moment. The scrolling text is cool, and the quality of sound in my helmet is EXCELLENT! When the ice>Link locks up my iPod...it's a bit disconcerting. At least it seems that Dension is trying to get this thing to work perfectly. We'll see.
But I'm the wrong guy to compare an ice>Link / iPod setup with satellite radio though. Just the word "radio" makes me shudder. And to pay for "radio"? . . . no way! And you know what's coming next don't you? COMMECIALS!!! Yessir...just like cable TV. Remember when it didn't have any commercials? The way I see it...in order to get XM or Sirius, you have to buy the equipment, buy a mount for the LT, and pay a monthly fee. That's an awful lot of dishing out cash just to listen to tunes piped into your head. Just my 2 cents though...

Thanks Joe, appreciate the feedback.
We don't have any choice regarding the sat. radio in Australia, it just doesn't exist..... so the only way to go is the iPod.
Guess I'll take the plunge with the Ice Link and see how it goes.

I have a ice>link that at this time is the worst $100 I have spent on the machine. It shut downs, skips at the beginning of each song and sometimes if I do not start it before I get on the bike it will not play.
Since it seems that firmware is a key to this disgusting contraption how do you know what version of firmware you have and how do you upgrade?
I can also confirm that the morons at Dension primary answer is "you must have done something wrong".
Appreciate any help

Since it seems that firmware is a key to this disgusting contraption how do you know what version of firmware you have and how do you upgrade?Look at your iPod when you first plug it into the ice>Link and turn the LT's radio, then play your iPod. You should see a Dension splash screen...then a warning screen and your firmware level is displayed at the top right corner. If you do not see this screen...you may have a version 1.x ice>Link, and not an ice>Link PLUS. At that point, I don't know what to tell you. I guess that makes me a moron too?
Fred, I realize you're frustrated. But try not to mix venting & ranting with asking for help. It doesn't help your cause very much. JMTC
