I am considering a Wunderlich Oil Cooler Guard for my RT, mainly because of ease of installation. It does look like it makes the total area smaller thus letting less air thru. Has anyone had any experience with this product?

Greetings Ferd :wave

I can't share about the Wunderlich product. However, I've been using coarse pre-filter air filter material on my RT for almost a year. This is the type of coarse foam that one finds at a place that sells accessories for dirt bikes and ATVs. It's about $15 for a sheet that will make several pre-filters for your RT. It's flexible so it's easy to work it in behind the stock oil cooler cowling. Just my .02

I've seen the wunder guard in place, and to me it looks a little kludgey. Like REAL tupperware on the front of your bike. I like Mr. Beck's idea of the coarse filter material if you don't want to take the fairing off and put the aluminum material in - like another thread on this forum.

My .02 - and that's all it's worth.

I agree with you Brian. At least in the web site pictures it did look a little weird. That is why I asked for advice on this forum. I appreciate everybody's input.

I'll be purchasing one soon before I go from Chicago to San Diego. Easy install, and functional. Personal opinion, I think they look fine.

I fitted one to my 08 model. Whilst looks-wise it does put more emphasis on the kidney grill area I don't think that bit detracts from the bike in any way.

Also it was easy to install and makes cleaning much easier. Well worth it in my opinion.

Just make sure that you install it in a warm, dry area to give the adhesive pads as much chance of sticking as possible.

I've been using one for 45,000 miles, from Death Valley in the summer to Alaska. No problems with cooling. The LCD temp gauge does show a very slight increase, but, as long as you are moving it's not a problem.

I wonder if adding a course filter material ahead of the cooler would cause overheating as well...................???? I'm heading to florida next week and would love to avoid digging out love bugs from my cooler.

I considered the Wunderlich item for the easy install mentioned, but ended up with Touratech's (http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?sku=047-0120&-session=touratech:4C5B5CAB057ed20BA4KHN3A16880) screen instead. A 5 minute installation after the headlight cowling is off, so I combined that with a larger project requiring removal. I'm happy with mine!

I ordered a Touratech guard as I have to take the front off anyhow to install a different antenna. It will give me a good chance to learn more about my bike and I can do some cleaning when everything is off.

If your RT has the single pancake horn, this would be an ideal time to replace with dual OEM trumpet style horns. I had already replaced mine before installing the Touratech screen, but doing so would have been even simpler with the cowling off. I'm just sayin...

+1 on doing the screens and the horn at the same time. There is another thread here from Semper_Fi that deteails the horn part numbers and installation - very nice.

I had thought about a protective screen as well. FYI - a window screen on a house blocks 50 percent of the airflow.

Roger that on the window screen. However, placing the correct material in the grille will do nicely. See thread below.

BTW - The 3rd post in the thread has a link to a document with step-by-step and pictures on how to remove the front tupperware. Further down the vendor for the correct material is sourced.

Granted my '07 R1200 RT is Titan Silver in color, and the Wunderlich guard is close to that color, but I have no problem with the way the guard fits, looks or performs.

I cleaned everything very well before installation so the double-sided tape would stick. The guard is paintable and W. provides some paper forms to allow you to paint part of it a different color. I certainly have never had a problem w/ heat and this includes Death Valley in June, Nevada in Sept and many miles in many other hot spots.

W. = pricey, yes. but as usual it seems worth it to not have to futz around trying to make something else work! :)

I have a Wunderlich oil cooler gaurd. Been fitted for 2 years and 10000 miles - does an excellent job and does not impede airflow.

I've had the Wunderlich on for approx 10K miles. I like it. No problems with over heating.

Two things I like about it.

1) I live in Nebraska. We have lots of bugs in the summer. It's much easier to clean the Wunderlich then the bare oil cooler.

2) Last fall, on a trip from Omaha to Denver, I took a rock that cracked my CB headlight guard (good reason for the guard). Based on the damage to the headlight cover, it looks to me like if the rock would have been a few inches lower and would have hit an unprotected oil cooler, I might have had a pretty bad oil leak.

I had the same issue. I trimmed some 3M super velcro (available at Target and Walmart). One side went on the bike and the other inside the screen (obviously). Makes the cooler screen easily removable. Silicone is a little too permanent for me.

I went with the Wunderlich and am satisfied. Like the last post, I used industrial strength velcro for ease of removal. Preparing the surfaces with rubbing alcohol, it appeared to apply firmly. It was an 80 degree day here yesterday and I could detect no difference in oil temp. Did a considerable amount of slow riding as well. It actually looks better than I anticipated, which was a consideration that was holding me back. It will slow down that granite missile.

I just installed one.Spoke to a Wunderlich guy on the phone. He suggested silicone rather than the two sided tape. That`s what I used, and it was a nice instillation, however, figure out a way to really hold it tightly to the bike while the silicone hardens, or it will fall off. Sorry about the run on sentence.

I installed one a few weeks ago. Seems to be holding well with the tape provided. Like the looks and should protect well. The color of the plastic appears to be a perfect match.
