Fair Price and Which one

Well you guys have convinced me, I need to get an RT. I have found 2 so far.
Bike 1:2005 4500 miles, 6000 mile service done, scratches on left bag, needs tires, chip in windshield $13500 bottom line.
Bike 2: 2005 17,400 miles, as good cosmetically, service up to date, BMW Top Case, BMW tank bag, bag liners, V-Stream and stock shield and asking $13100.

Either sound like a better option? Either priced fair or are they both too high?

I would say they both sound like they are priced way to high. Option number 2 seems better. The mileage difference doesnt affect the value much. You seems to be getting more upgrades on a bike in better condition for less money. I am leary of BMW's that have been sitting. I think they really need to be ridden on a regular basis. 17k miles shows the bike has been ridden. The BMW topcase is expensive as is some of the other options.

By comparison, I just recently bought my 05 R1200RT with 20,XXX miles on it. The bike is flawless with no scratches and in mint condition. It came with a 1000 dollars in intercom, a sirrius satelite radio, some cosmetic add ons, a new rear tire with a few thousand remaining on the front, Garage kept by the original owner, Kissan headlight modulator, (2) Z-technit handlebar accesory mounts and some other small misc items. This bike looks like it rolled off the showroom floor and just had its registration paid. all services performed by the dealer with paperwork to prove it. I paid 10,500 for it. So, to me, both bikes you mentioned seem high in price especially given that i have heard of people buying brand new RT's for in the 15k range. Given the econimic downturn I think you could find better. However; I have noticed a lack of R1200RT's to be found used.

Both seem high to me too. I would wait for a better deal. I tend to agree with the previous poster that bikes need to be ridden...but some people are just too busy to ride much and I would not shy away from a low-mileage bike. My fiirst RT had just 2,200 miles on it and I bought it in Feb., which is not good riding weather here in the northern states.

I tend to favor a bike that is still in warranty. You can have peace of mind that if it has any of the major issues that you can read about, you have a chance of getting it fixed under warranty. The cost of some of these repairs, in my opinion, is not worth the risk, of buying out of warranty, unless you get it for a steal of a price.

So look for something in the mid to late 06 and newer and ride the piss out of it to see if anything is wrong..and get it fixed. Make sure you look for the signal of oil leaks...which are very easy to miss! Not sure if it was this board or the sport touring board where I learned how and where to look. Sure enough I had an oil leak JUST starting and I took it in for warranty repair.

You will love the RT........and I have ridden H.D's, Honda, Yamaha and Triumph. :bmw:

Show up with cash in hand. I mean really show up with cash, maybe 12k dollars worth. Go look at the bike in person then whip out the money and make the offer. The guy I bought mine from was asking more and said he was absolutely firm, no budging at all. I whipped out my cash and told him thats all I have. I offered it to him and said I can offer this or else I have to walk. He took it. Something told me that he really needed the money. Cash talks. I never negotiate with people over the phone when I sell a bike, especially from craigslist.

Check BMWsporttouting as well and on their classified section. I have seen R1200RT's that were better deals than mine pop up. If you can, do a fly and ride. I did one for a GS once where I flew to Denver, Colorado and rode home to sacramento, CA. It was great and is one of the best motorcycle experiences i have ever had.

I picked up my 01 R1100 Rt for a steal......Let's leave it at that.
15k on the clock and in near perfect condition... Ok it has two, countem two small scratches on it..

Just be patient and the right deal will come along.

10k even would be a steal for it. I would have expected an asking price of about 11.5-12k with room to negotiate and a final price of 11-11.5k.

Just speaking to demand, I bought my RT the day after the ad came out and the seller told me he had a ton of emails on it with multiple people already making plans to drive from out of town for it. I cant speak to the truth in that or if it was lines but I knew a good deal when I see one and I could easily see people buying my bike for 11k in a heartbeat. He was asking 11k for it. Keep in mind that I find motorcycle prices to fluctuate a bit based on demographics. Some people will argue this one but it seems the prices are normally a bit higher here in california where we have 364 out of 365 days to ride versus a place like Minnesota where your lucky if your bike isnt an ice cube right now. I flew to colorado for my GS becasue it was what I wanted and was cheaper than if I found it here. I was able to turn around and sell it for 2k more than what I paid for it. It wouldnt have been on the market for more than a day if it was advertised for the same price it was in colorado. I am not familiar with the market in your area but all I can say is, dont get wrapped up in some of the prices you see in other areas unless you intend to do a fly and ride or ship it. I have found better deals than mine but there out in the stix in the mid west. The local pick up of mine was worth a few extra dollars.

I would love to get one for 10k but have no problem going to 12K for a good bike. Wanted to make sure I was in a reasonable range for an 05-06 RT. 13K to 15.5K is what I have seen in Ga. May need to travel.

I bought an '05 RT with 12.5K on the clock last April for 12.5K. It has esa, cruise control and heated seats/grips.. Red with pinstriping. Condition was mint with warranty.

I figure the bikes in question should be worth no more then 12K depending on options.

Dang, you got taken hard unless it was in really rough shape. Someone scored a deal on you. I have seen 1150 RT's with higher mileage getting more than that.

It needs tires and I'm paying $10,500 . I think this is a decent deal , maybe a little under market but not much . And Nevada is sensible enough to not charge sales tax on private party sales .

I just bought a 2008 RT with every BMW option available plus a BMW tank bag and BMW highway pegs. 3,500 miles for $16,000. Immaculate and not a scratch on it. It has the low seat though so I am going to sell the heated low seat and get a standard heated seat.

Went by the dealer today to check out the bikes again and I think I can do a standard with a low seat. He (dealer) asks me if I would be interested in a used machine and after listening to you guys I say why not. He just got a 2007 RT with 14,000 miles, it has every option that is listed for the RT, has PIA running lights, is wired for GPS with bracket, wired for Gerbing front and back, has extended handle bars, a larger windshield, extension on the shift and brake and the pegs are lowered. No scratches same dealer just did the 12,000 and there is new rubber on the front and back for 14,500.00 so I guess there are some good deals out there. :dance:

Sweet, enjoy. i am going to take mine out for a few hundred mile day ride tommorow as well. You need to go up some nice twisty roads to see where the RT shines, especially compared to the LT.

Nice bike, I love the color. My 05 is the light grey color. It still looks nice but if I had the choice I would have got the dark graphite color. I am sure you will enjoy it. I took mine out for 200+ miles yesterday and it was insanely great. I love this bike more and more. I have owned a ton of bikes and there hasnt been a single one that I have prized as much as this one. It just does everything so damn well. Carving tight twisties, staying rock solid on straightaways, great weather protection, smooth suspension. THis bike has somethign in its arsenal for everything. Here are some pics from yesterdays ride, unfortunately mine isnt as clean as yours. I find it hard to wanna wash it when I could be riding it.

Awesome pictures! I like the silver color also. My K12LT is Titan Silver. Looks like some beautiful riding. My ride went all through downtown Atlanta. In all the years I have been riding here I had never done that. Some of the small roads had some really tight fun twisties. Can't wait to get to the mountains.
