Spring Training Camp for Riders 2009, April 16 – 18 …

It is time to start the roster for this, the Fifth annual installment of STC. Just what is STC? It is a gathering of friends who happen to love motorcycles, love to ride them, love to work on them, love to accessorize them, and love to be around other riders that love them too. In addition to a great social gathering of riders in the Great Smoky Mountains, there are great roads to ride and outstanding food to eat.

It is held at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge located in Stecoah, NC hosted by John and Charlene Powell (http://www.ironhorsenc.com/ (http://www.ironhorsenc.com/)) with private and semi private cabins, bunkhouse and camping as well as RV sites. They are open this year during the off season so check out their web site and drop them a line or e-mail to make your reservation. Be sure and mention it is for STC as I have blocked out several rooms.

I thought I would place a bit more emphasis on the “Training” portion this year. If you read the MOA magazine’s January issue you may have seen the Motosafe column that interviewed David Hough on the current state of Safety courses. When asked about track schools David replied,” The ex-racers teach what they know, which is going fast around corners. Definitely, we can all benefit from learning better cornering skills. After all, about half of motorcycling crashes are single vehicle, mostly with the rider losing control in a curve. The limitation of track schools that focus on cornering is that they don’t deal with common hazards. On the track, there aren’t any embarrassing problems such as loose moose or slippery rail crossings”.

Along those lines I have an ex-racer coming to give us a seminar Friday night after dinner and Saturday she will take small groups out and critique them on the local roads with a follow on seminar Saturday night. She was here at STC three years ago and I am happy to say she has agreed to return, the Queen of Quick – Susan Galpin. In talking with Susan about the presentation, she said that “this seminar consists of riding techniques and information, regardless of the type of bike you ride, that will help you as it has helped her remain safe.”

We also have a Friday maintenance demo on drilling that famous weep hole for the slave cylinder. Dan Sullivan (sully2028) has donated his ride for the demo and he plans to video the process to share at CCR this year.

While there is NO fee associated with this gathering a donation jar will be available to help defray the costs of the seminars.

Well how fitting, I have not been to Spring Training Camp for 3 years, nor monitored the postings of the event. I just looked and see that "The Queen is Coming"! Who has the guts to ride on the back of their LT while she pilots it knowing that she can not reach the ground? That is what I want to know. Will she once again embarrass the R1 boys, giving them a 60 second head start and then smoking them in double jeopardy? Anyway getting to the point as of now, count me in!

Don't know what all is planned and I certainly don't want to cause and overload in the schedule but if you think there might be time my bike's due and others might be interested in the process and I could certainly use the expert direction. If you think it might be possible just let me know what I need to bring. I'm traveling by bike this year but will have my cargo trailer so can bring at least a few tools if required.

"Tech Stuff"??? We haven't done anything tech during the day in the last couple of years. If it's riding you're looking for, then you've come to the right place. But like stated by some others, not many of the SOs are solo riders, but you're always welcome to ride with those of us that go two up or even that go solo. :D

Heck, if Dave had got the LT before I learned to ride I might have never been inspired too! :D We were riding on the 4-wheeler the other day, and it struck me how I kinda missed the closeness that riding two-up affords. I've been to STC twice or three times now. If it rains or snows, there will be Tech Sessions. Otherwise, the tech session cut into everyone's riding time.

I would recommend planning on getting your b'fast and dinner at the Ranch. IMHO, it's a great way to start and end your day.

I learned a lot at my first and second Camp. I'm sure you will too!

We've stayed at the Iron Horse a few times and it's a great place - Charlene Powell and her crew are definitely first rate. And that Saturday night prime rib dinner is simply the best. I'd stay there more often if it wasn't so close to home.

You must have been riding Steve. We attempted a weep hole on Doug's bike but had to abort. Then I gave Howard a private oil change lesson and flushed the brakes on Fred's bike. The garage has been used!

We plan to video the drilling of the weep hole on a K1200LT for presentation at the CCR and posting of this site. I volunteered to do the video and am ready to do that. But I thought it would be good to have a backup video. I will be taking a lot of still pictures too.

I can't wait for next Wednesday to escape from work and get back up into the Smokies for some great riding, socializing and eating (you have to try a CBS and you will find out what it is when you get there). I had to work in Knoxville on Monday so I made a trip up through the area we'll be ridiing and here's what I' found.

1. US-129 North from the US-129/US-19 split, for about 4 miles you're under a slide watch. Looks like they've already had a couple and the south bound lane go beat up, but it is patched.

2. US-129 from the Tapoco Lodge up through Deal's Gap to the NC/TN state line has new pavement. New surface also extends on NC-28 from Deal's Gap about 4 to 5 miles.

3. New pavement on NC-28 south bound from the bridge across the Nantahala River to the Fontana Dam entrance.

4. Storms came through on Sunday night and blew all sorts of debris and trees out on the road. When I made the pass through there headed home yesterday, all the trees had been cleared from the road way, but there was still lots of pine trash on the road.

Came across a group of sport bike riders just starting out about 4 miles south of the view pullouts on the north end of the Dragon. Seems one of them low sided and the bike went over the edge and was down the side of the mountain about 60 feet. He wasn't hurt and didn't go over the edge.

5. Weather last night was supposed to be more of the same as Sunday night, so I expect there will be more tree trash on the road. Not much sun until later this week so if you coming through the Dragon on your way in, take you time and ride safely.

Stopped by the Iron Horse, and Charlene and John are ready for us. They say it's been a long winter and they ready for us to come wake them up.

This was one of the most wonderful weekends I have ever had. Incredible weather, excellent food, but above all, fellowship in a way that few get to experience. Susan's seminar was very worthwhile and informative and will continue to improve my technical skills as I use them. I made some new friends and hope to be back.

Got safely home late yesterday afternoon. Glad I was able to get an early start as I had only light misty weather to deal with through Atlanta. After that just cloudy skies until I hit the Florida border where the sun was peaking through and it was a balmy 84 degrees.

STC was once again a great experience. Many thanks to John for coordinating this great event and especially for his willingness to spend a full day wrenching and sharing his in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm for maintaining our machines.

Also, thanks to Steve and Connie for allowing me to tag along on a ride with them. I thoroughly enjoyed the roads, the scenery and the company.

Again a great time at the STC! never had better weather. Regardless of why we had such great days it made for some amazing riding. :rolleyes:

I left about 5 am and stayed just in front of the rain. Made it home in at 5:30 pm with dry roads cloudy skies. could have done with out the hour of frog walking traffic out side of Baltimore.

A big thanks to John for all his work to make this a very memorable event!!

Here are the memories:
1. Arrived on Thursday in time for dinner (with alcohol from another county)
2. Along with Tom Gary had a chance to meet up several other riders most notably the ever present stalwarts of the LT community Larry Rosenstiel, John Zeiler and Don Norwood.
3. Rides on Friday and Saturday - it does not get any better
4. Post dinner presentations on Friday and Saturday by Susan Galpin
5. Maintenance procedures by John Zeiler on Friday and Saturday - wow!!
6. Prime Rib Dinner on Saturday
7. Night time camp fires with the constant sound of the babbling brook when you're outside
8. Rain on Sunday all the way to Cincinnati - the LT runs @ 80 mph in the rain just fine

Special Commendation:
Part of Susan's spirited riding course has you running the LT at high rpms's
Ran 95% of the Cherola Skyway in 2nd gear at 6,000 to 7,500 rpm for 45 minutes
The bike just sings at that rpm - what a difference this makes in handling and corners
Well there is a downside = vibration
I developed an electrical problem and all my farkeles were turning off and on
Saturday night I drag John Zeiler into the garage and after a few moments of observing the problem, a quick look at the wiring diagram on his computer he provides a quick diagnosis and he says - Load Shed Relay
After taking out the battery and disconnecting my Centec fuse block we find a loose bolt - not an obvious electrical connection in front of the battery compartment. Used a special tool to tighten up put all the works back together and viola - we are back in business.
I believe this loose allen bolt was due to my new high speed vibrations.

So I am a believer in The Myth - The Man - The Mustache . . . John Zeiler!!!
John did admit he enjoys solving problems - mine however took him only about 5 minutes!!

In closing:
John and Charlene Powell run a real class operation - they are totally involved and hands on - always accommodating - worry about your well being - and even lend you tools. I would call them very fine hosts . . . pass this on! :)

It was great meeting you and Dave. You guys obviously had a great time last week; we hope you come back for more visits.

I checked out your post on the Chromehead site. Nice write-up. You said "We ended up with the semi-private cabins..which means you share a bathroom. Luckily, the other room was occupied by a lone male so it worked out really well. (Hi Howard!) He was always walking out of the cabin to start his day when we were just ready to wakeup. I imagine if I had to share a bathroom with a high maintenance-type woman though it could have been a little more difficult. We spent a lot of time on the front porch."

As the "lone male" you guys shared the cabin with, I just want to say thanks for the beer! And, I'm glad our schedules worked out so well. At first, I had thoughts of waiting for an hour for the shower to be available, but that was never the case. I'm an early riser, due to a back problem that wakes me up early each morning.

Glad you made it home without getting wet- on my trip home I got soaked and hosed!

After not listening to the everyone at the Ironhorse, I took off with a very bald tire that by 1 pm had started to show threads in several spots! (I'll post pictures later).

I call every BMW/Honda/Harley dealer in the southeast for a replacement. Nuttin'. It seems the BMW dealers had a rush on tires for the LT for some sort of smallish rally somewhere.:p

Of course, I spend 2 hours tracking down a tire. Bobs BMW was the only one who had the correct size- some 350 miles away. All the other dealers said they might be able to get one in by Tuesday or Wednesday at the earliest. So, 8 hours and $500 later, I was towed to Bobs. The good news- I slept overnight at my brother in laws house. The bad news- they were closed on Sunday and had no tech on hand till Tuesday.

Yesterday, I buy the tire and run down the rode to a Honda dealer who mounts it. I go back to Bobs and reinstall. I'm finally on the road by 12 pm in the pouring rain.

I finally arrived home at 8pm. The 'Stich and the Zumo worked as advertised- waterproof!

I can't say enough for Bob Hening (sp?) at Bob's. He was a gracious host and really tried to help me out but they just had their open house and his techs were just exhausted. He is a first class owner!

As for STC- what can I say! Despite my TWO tows and all of the unexpected adventures, I can't what for the Fall Reunion!

It was great seeing, riding and learning from all of you. I thank you for a great week!

LaNett and I also had a great time! Seth, too. Thanks for making it happen, John! It was great to see familiar faces and to speak to a few new folks, even if in just brief conversations.

I thought the tech tips from Susan were very useful. Rode the Cherohala in 1st and 2nd (got to 3rd in a few straights, or less curvy areas). RPMs were up around 55-6500. Makes a huge difference.

The bike held up superbly. This was a perfect "shakedown" for it after leaving the shop the day before.

Of course we left Saturday, so rain wasn't a problem. :D Rode the BRP to Asheville, then skedaddled back down to the lowland.

My only regret is we didn't have more time to chat and mingle. There's always the fall reunion- I look forward to it.

I had a great time...Whoa there, sir. The only area in which you might qualify as a "newbie" is in BMW ownership. Your years of riding are evident, and your K1300GT really makes your skills shine. Riding behind you over numerous mountains I enjoyed watching how smooth and consistent your riding is. :cool:

I will have a extra good used mounted spare rear tire with me this weekend. Its a ME880 with enough good rubber left for dry road riding. I'm almost done packing. See ya tomorrow.

I apologize for not posting this earlier than the 15th. When I read the post from Diehly it dawned on me too let everyone know I would have a good spare wheel & tire with me for the weekend. It had at least 2000 miles left on it.

I didn't get to meet Rob but I think he was in a tent across the stream from my room. When I read his post my heart just sank. I wish I could have traded my extra tire & wheel for his. He would have more than likely got home with no problems. Heck being only 3hrs from home I'd of swapped the tire off my bike if that what's it would take to ensure a good safe ride home.

I wonder if in future events we could have a small bulletin board located somewhere to post for mechanical needs like this.

I rode with Rob both Thursday and Friday and we were loosely monitoring his rear tire and thought that he could get home on it. I had a new rear tire mounted in Charlotte on Wednesday morning and came straight to Ironhorse. After hearing about Rob's problem, I thought the exact same thing as I am currently living in Morganton just a couple of hours away and wished that I had swapped rear wheels with Rob. If there were a couple of pairs of front and rears and a changer at STC, I feel certain that they would get used. The tough part is who bears the cost and hauls the parts and pieces. I like your suggestion of the bulletin board.

Wheelers in Robbinsville had a rear tire and mounted it on Dan's bike while we had it apart for the weep hole drill. Found a flat spot with cord showing when we put it up on the lift. Tires and mounting are available in the local area. Perhaps I'll suggest to Wheelers that they stock additional LT tires during April and October. :)

Rob, don't beat yourself up too badly. We've all been there.

I used to have a horse like that (really): get him within sight of the barn and it was all I could do to keep him reined in or he would sprint all the way home. Not usually a good thing.

You were just anxious to go home on Saturday and head home to your own "barn", know what I mean?

I suppose I could trailer the LT to Iron Horse next time, bring my tire changer with me, and we could offer our very own on-site tire service. :cool: Or, go with the suggestions of using local shops.
