View Full Version : K1200LT burn out

EdAnderson
Jan 7th, 2009, 12:44 am
I picked up a screw in my rear tire. Ive been thinking of giving the old tar a proper sendoff. Question? I've done plenty of burnouts on other bikes. Any ideas on best technique for the linked braking system?

Don't use the brakes, find a sturdy object to bump the front tire against.

That being said I would not recommend doing burnouts with an LT what with it's weight and known weak clutches it could prove to be much more costly than it's worth.

Don't forget to record it and post on YOUTUBE!

I doubt you'll kill the clutch. Once you break free, look out.

You may have to block her as suggested or otherwise disable the rear brake.

One more thing:

Power is a "relative" thing. This is like doing a burnout in a VW Beatle! hehe Wouldn't be worth it to me and besides, those kinds of burnouts coat your fender well with hot rubber......also coats it with evidence of abuse!

I would love to see this... Be sure to video record the burnout and post it somewhere!!!

Make sure you get some tatts before you record it.

Bout the only way is with the front tire against an immovable object and a little oil under the rear tire to help it spin freely.

Back in my high school days, we would put some bleach under the wheel, This gives it some free spin and you also get a nice big white cloud of smoke!
Won't hurt the clutch either, just put the front wheel up against a wall or something.

Just put some kind of lube under the tire to get it spinning. Water,Oil,Bleach what ever & let it rip. If ya hurt the clutch it wont have been worth it.

Thanks guy's. I pretty much had the same thoughts about blocking the front tire or disconnecting rear brake. As far as trashing the clutch a little water under the rear tire would stop the initial bite from ripping the clutch apart. When I get off this set of graveyards, I think I'm gonna try it. Will get video of it to post on here.

Let me know were and when.

Since I am local I will come over and watch this from a safe distance. But while the event is on I will deny knowing who you are or that I ride the same kind of bike. The local TV channels run out of apartment fires, QuanellX, and murder stories often. You may want to alert them.

I have done a smokey burnout on my first LT. It was a 2000 model so there wasnt an issue on linked brakes. I found a spot on the sidewalk under the overhang of where I worked. There was a small section where they did a super smooth area of concrete in between the decorative areas. I lined the tire up just right, held the front brake, stood up off the seat, revved it up and let the clutch go. It actually didnt take mutch to get it going. One really nice cloud of smoke. Howeever the K1200RS was alot better at burnouts. Heck, I even did a burout under acceleration on that bike. It got the bike sideways a bit until I let off the throttle. Of course when I tried that same thing at an intersection the front end came up. Did I mention that my clutch blew out on the K1200RS at 6k miles? :rotf:

And just think..... That bike (with a host of hidden problems) will be on the market for some poor unsuspecting sap one day........ Can I have the vin # before the burnout? Just a reference in case I'm ever in the market for an 08. Thanks!

Please, i think some of you are going overboard about the clutch and final drive. Sorry but I think it takes a bit more. Some of you guys seem to think the the cluch and final drive are just goign to explode in a matter of second. I relaly dont think you would be do any harm at all to the final drive. It would take a hell of alot more than that to do damage. The clutch may burn a bit and you will proabbaly smell some burning. Your just going to take some miles off the clutch. Thats my.02cents worth. But heck, I have done a burnout with an LT before so....

Wow, you guys are harsh. Let him have his fun, it is his bike after all.

I'm looking forward to the video, although I wouldn't do a burnout with my LT the Bandit has certainly destroyed some rubber in a cloud of smoke once or twice. :D

I think with all the problems going on in the world, We all should step back and act a little younger once in awhile. I believe he will pull it off with no problems. Have fun with it and make sure the video camera is on. You may want to do it on private property just in case Johnny is in a bad mood. When I was a senior in high school during burnout week, I backed my car up to the rear doors of the school and did my burnout. Everyone started to run away so I thought the principal was coming. Then I saw the flames! I guess there was a lot of molten rubber and perhaps the steel belts ignited it.

trainingwheelz
Jan 9th, 2009, 8:41 am
Nose up to a brick wall in second gear, just before you put the wheel to the wall have a buddy squirt a bit of dishwashing detergent in front of the tire so it'll be sitting in it. When your front wheel is touching, have the buddy squirt some more on the tire, all the way around. Both feet on the ground, light pressure on the front brakes for stability (linked braking won't have a significant effect with light pressure). Gradually release the clutch and give her some throttle just as if you were taking off from a stop and the rear wheel will start spinning, once the clutch lever is fully out and you are absolutely vertical, add throttle. If you feel the bike move off of vertical, back off the throttle a bit until you have it completely under control again. Keep an eye on the tach to keep your rpm's under redline.

You can use bleach for more smoke, but the dish detergent really gets the rear wheel spinning (and you'll get plenty of smoke) without the violence to the clutch to get it going.

(Since the clutch is fully disengaged, I don't see where you're putting your clutch at risk here)

*in theory...your results may vary...the FDA has not approved this advice for diagnosis or treatment of medical disorder...void where prohibited...not valid with other offers...cannot confirm nor deny personal knowledge of effectiveness of these techniques...requires adult supervision

Enjoy your smoky goodness.

Jyou callin me a liar? Izzz he callin me a liar? :rotf:

Dude, if I had video footage of every burnout I made, my hard drive would be full. I also would have needed to take a camera with me wherever I went on my Buell X1 lightning. That bike did insane burnouts. I pulled up to an intersection between the cars uo to where a firend was at. He rolled the window down and asked me to light it up, so of course I did. There was so much smoke, the lady in the car next to me thought her car was on fire. :histerica

Long time ago, in a high school parking lot far, far away...we had a big-block burnout contest whilst attending an alternative education session in the parking lot. The ass. principal comes running out with a fire extinguisher to find nothing much more than a few piles of molten rubber and a few equally "concerned" auto shop students. From then on the standard greeting for him was "Hey man, where's the fire?".

Sorry for the delay with the video. First My Videographer lost the patch cord that hooks the camera to the computer. Then we get into artistic differences about music for the background, Which angles show the best smoke. Now splicing it together to make it look right will take place on friday with uploads promised for that night. Get your popcorn and beer ready for the Friday matinee.

With this commitment in tact, I have taken off work on Friday and set my alarm two hours early. I rented a projector from the library and have it super sized on the white wall in my greatroom. Have added another amp to my surround sound. I am going to bed early but will probably just toss and turn in anticipation! For the love of Jerry Garcia and my Cherokee ancestors, be careful!
