View Full Version : Cruise Control Lunge When Set

I have a 2002 K1200LT. When I accelerate to a particular speed, then set the cruise, the bike accelerates slightly, then settles back to the speed I set it at.
Not a huge problem but a little annoying. I previously owned a 2003 K1200LT and when I set the cruise at a certain speed, it locked in at that speed and never varied.
Is there an adjustment somewhere?
Thanks,
Ron

The only thing I can think of is the cables are a bit out of adjustment. The manual does not have a lot to say but they do specify the slack in the cruise control cable as well as the preset on the adjuster near the throttle rail. I have never messed with them but several here have and may chime in with suggestions.

Mine always picks up speed when I hit the set button and stays there. I know to hit the button at a speed about 1.5 mph lower than what I want to lock in at...not a big deal. I can always tap the button up or down a notch if I'm not happy where she ends up at.

Mine did that too. I found that I was letting off the throttles as I was engaging the cc, which caused a "bump" in speed. Now when I set it, I make sure that I am using a slight positive pressure on the throttles and I have a smooth transition. I just did my throttle cable mod, and the cruise cable tension was good, so I didn't jack with it. If you can't resolve it with a slight change in riding style, I would say that you have too much slack in the cable. An easy fix next time you have the left fairing off. The cable has a tensioning adjustment nut about mid way down the run.....

Thanks for the "fix." My 02 does the same thing and I just thought this was normal.

Mine does that from time to time. I just thought it was that I held the set button a little too long. Either way it doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it.

I've noticed the same thing on our 99. The dealer had his mechanic reset the cables on the throttle. I then pulled the right grip assemble apart to find the cables were really binding up, trying to go back to the neutral position, so I put them back the way they were, and left it at that.

My 2002 has always behaved like this also. Making sure I am coming up to the speed I want instead of rolling off the throttle down to speed when the cruise is set helps quite a bit.

Same as Dan. A little positive preasure on setting and it's smooth.

I had same problem in my 2004. After adjusting cables I got it working well.
Never had that problem in my 2000 model.
So, my suggest is to try what cable adjusting does. It is very simple wotk to DIY. Just remove left side fairing and you have access to cable. Then just try to adjust and test drive. After couple of adjust tests it should be OK.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I will try to adjust the cable next time I have the fairing off. Until then, I'll try the throttle technique.
