View Full Version : January RTE

Hiya all -
Last week at Grif's tech session, El Jeffe and I got to talkin' 'bout an RTE for January; discussing some wayz to spread the venue around so we can recruit more folks from the netheregions of So. Central territory. Thought maybe we'd do somethang 'twixt the Metroplex and the Hill Country for January; then move east toward Salado for February; then further east toward Nacogdoches or into LA for March, etc. Trying not to rub up too close to some of the regional rally's dates. Then move up north, maybe into AR for April, etc., etc.
Sooo - with that thought, I checked my 'list of-' and came up with somethang around Lampasas, where we've never been. My 'list-of' showed a fine German-themed restaurant that has garnered some kudos from area folks for sometime. Upon more detailed checking on the Lampasas city's website, I found 3 other restaurants with the same street address, butt with different names and phone numbers. And there is no mention of the German one.
Well, I'm gonna call and get the lowdown, butt wuz wonderin' in the meantime if anyone hereabouts has any ideas for the Lampasas area? I know Grif and the gang stopped in Lampasas for munchies on their return trip home from the M/C show in Dallas coupla years ago, butt I don't think they ate at the German restaurant. Wonder if where they stopped would work, providing I don't find out any good info on the German place??
Also - we're looking at the week-end of Jan 28/29th for this event. Any strong objections or bias toward which day? Kinda give me a short reply to this post, while I do some checking in Lampasas. And if Lampasas turns out negative, then El Jeffe said the McGregor event that Monte hosted last year wuz pretty good. May be an alternate location.
Thanks folks - have a great MLK day Monday; ride safe if you're on holiday that day!!

I'm down for Lampasas on Saturday 28th, Sunday's in small town's can be killer with the church crowd. Don't remember the name of the restaraunt, it was after you made the right turn coming south on the right hand side. I do remember it was large, clean, the food was good and there was oaks out front. Wonder if a google search would come up with that one?

Lampassas on the last Saturday of Jan. sounds good for me. Lampassas is not far from my casa, either. Lets work on the travel plans, maybe we can ride some of the way as a group.

Hey Bill - you know there is alwayz the Blue Bonnet in Marble Falls, or the Blanco Bowling Alley Cafe in Blanco, or a new one that I visited yesterday.
Cheryl and I had lunch with Barrett and Myra at the Sojourners Cafe in beautiful downtown Dripping Springs. It's right on 290, south side, just about a block west of the 12 intersection. I tell ya, I been by the place a hunnert times and never saw it. Basic no-frills dining - good service - good food (no left-over quesadillas for me, and Barrett's plate went back empty!!!), nice variety, and they do breakfast all day!!! May have to do that one sometime in lieu of the BBAC?!?
Anyway, I think for us in the Hill Country, either the BBAC or Sojourners would be breakfast - Marble Falls might be too close to Lampasas to work up the hongries for lunch (only about 45 minutes), unless we take the long route!!! Say - leave the Blue Bonnet and head west on 1431 thru Kingsland to 29, then west on 29 to Llano; then 16 north to 501 and turn east to just past Bend and then take 580 into Lampasas; be around 100 miles or so.
Guess we'll nail down the particulars next week after we git some input from the rowdies. ;) ;) Stay tuned.

Hey Bud - could it be *Limestone Grill 1802 S Highway 281 Lampasas TX*? It's on 281 after you make the right turn coming south on the right hand side. I'll ping 'em and see if they're the only ones on that side of the road between Main Street and the city park.

Yep - thought that might be it. I've noticed it there, butt am usually not running thru at lunchie time. I'll give 'em a call and alert 'em to the crowd of rowdies about to descend!!! After I talk to 'em, I'll start another thread with a roster, etdd (din-din), etc. Thanks Grif - makes my job too eazy!!!

Ok, Sat the 28th at Lampasas sounds good...but....
I gotta do my 12k service first. Does conventional wisdom dictate that I change the stupid air filter at 12K? I'll do the other stuff but really don't want to pull the tank yet if I don't have to. And I only have this coming Sat/Sun to do whatever I do. Out of town on the 21/22.
Yeah, yeah, "check the archives, do a search....", whatever...... Sombudy just tell me.

I did mine at 12K and wondered why after I got the old one out. Skipped it for the 24K, although I will admit I took a look at it. Tough to tell the difference in one with 12K on it and a new one. As always, YMMV.

I'll tell ya - you're buying breakfast at the BBAC that morning!!! Howz that?!?! :D
Seriously, where you and I ride is 'about' the same area and I wouldn't bother with the air filter for now. Nor the fuel filter. Butt, we can have a party at your 24k and git-r-all-done.
Glad you can make it on the 28th. You bringing Kathy with?
BTW - 'tain't nuttin' to pulling the tank. It's gittin' it back on that's the bitch sometimes. Only guy I know that can do it first try is Sandar the Mag's room mate!! Course, he practices a lot!! ;)

I'm thinking I might try and make this little get together - been a while since I've been on the bike  (what happens if I twist this thing on the right handlebar? :D).
Doubt I'll make breakfast but lunch sounds fun - anyone up for a ride through Enchanted Rock?

Speakin' of over it - I've never been any closer to it than the road nearby. Can you get up close and personal with it? I think I've seen pics of folks walking around up top - how'd they git up there? Is it on private land, or a public park, or sumpthin'? And I guess once you've been up there, it's a btdt sorta thang?

Yep, it's a state park - there's a fee to enter ($5?). I guess I should've been more specific - I hear the park is good but based on what I've seen, hear, and any other unreliable information source I could find I've come up w/ a little ride around the area - I just need to figure out how to make Lampasas fit in :).
I've had this route plotted for some time now - just haven't got out to ride :(. Attached is a Garmin file w/ two routes - the original loop and one w/ the RTE. If anyone is interested in doing the loop and the RTE - let me know. Heck, Dick, we could meet up in Johnson City and ride it from there.
Or we can do the loop on a later date - during the spring when the wildflowers bloom would be a good way to get the spousal units on the back of the bike :).

You bet you can walk it. There's even some neat caves of fallen boulders on top. Spent many an hour hiking around it and on top when the kid's were young.
We'd pick a day trip of some park on the weekend and took them before they turned into leetle monsters.
