View Full Version : How did you mount your Garmin XM antenna?

Got my 2820 today- I'm disappointed at how large the xm antenna is. I had the regular xm antenna mounted on top of the cowling so it had 360degree coverage.

I looked in the HOW and searched a while. If the info is there, it's all over the place so I thought I'd ask, If you have the 2820, where did you mount the gxm antenna? I'd like to "borrow" from your collective ideas.

Thanks!

The XM puck hasn't been around that long yet. Not many folks have mounted them, so you're on the leading edge on this one. Let us know what YOU figure out.

I have a sirius. I fabricated a mount out of sheet metal in the shape of a lollypop which attaches under the radio antenna, left side.

However I may rethink this idea. Though the lines are clean, when I head south through the mountains I sometimes loose signal. I am now thinking about some place over or under the top box.

Put mine on an empty wing on the BMR shelf. :)

Yeah, well. Thass cuz you're into function over form, and I'm into good lookin'!!! :histerica

I'm hearin' that some folks have put that butt ugly thang inside the trunk. Wonder if it'll work in there? One of these days, I may progress up the Garmin ladder from my StreetPilot I....... maybe!!

I use it in my "tank" bag. Works fine there and let's me move it to the cage with ease. (SP7500 in cage.)

There's a new one coming ... the GXM 40 ... so far Garmin is only saying it works with two new units and it doesn't appear to be any smaller that the GXM 30 although it's a different color. Has more XM services functionality, though.

BTW, did you notice that they get mighty warm while in use?

Tank bag here too....can move it from bike to bike and keeps "curious eyes" off of it. ;)

I have a metal sun shade on my 2820. I used two way tape and put it on top of the sun shade. I also have the external ant. for the GPS mounted there too. That way when you use it in the car it's all together.

"If you have the 2820, where did you mount the gxm antenna? I'd like to "borrow" from your collective ideas."

Using the BMR shelf, I added a steel wing (hardware store galvanized nailing plate 2" X 5" painted black) . I also use a rubber band (gasket from my old CX 500 or early Goldwing) to secure it from bumps. It is also used on the dash of the car. By the way, it is more than the antenna, it is the XM radio guts as well.

Mine's on a BMR Co-Pilot accessory wing. Zero signal problems.

Some folks worry about theft in an exposed location like that, but if you drill the shelf and screw it down using the tapped holes already in the GXM-30 (3mm as I recall), it's fairly secure.

OK, Dick wins. I finally mounted the BMR Copilot shelf I won at CCR. Put the GXM on a wing. Used Rat Shack super velcro.

i tried at least a dozen that I have gotten from the blood bank or my employer - WorleyParsons. It fits great. I'll ask around and see if I can get some more.

Put mine on a home made steel plate beside antenna. The trunk does "shade" the satellite signal at times when riding East, but overall it is OK.

Tried to mount it to the inside of the top box (top, of course) with velcro, but it was facing upside down. It was cutting out more than usual, so I flipped it upright and slid it into the mirror box (velcrod it in place). Works great in the mirror pocket, as long as the upside is facing up. So far, haven't noticed cutting out any more than when I used an xm antenna on the fairing with the 2720. Drilled a wire channel in the lower right side of the top box so the cable wouldn't crimp.

Keep us up to date on how this is working ..please ;) I have been experiencing a weak sig since the conversion to Sirius....cuts out under EVERY bridge and overpass

So far I've ridden it to work 3 times (33 miles one way, rural roads and interstate). I am familiar with the regular cut-out points and this seems to work better than the fairing mounted antenna I used before the 2820, but there are 1 or two cut-out points (one overpass and one-low valley obstructed by trees and hillside). I can live with it.

And after I mounted it, I put luggage on the toprack, filled with rags, and drove around the neighborhood slowly to see if it would cut out- it didn't.

I really want to avoid having that huge disk sitting out in the open and this seems to work.
