Cambria Ride 2009 - May 9th & 10th

Howdy!

I've been working on plans for the Spring Ride to Cambria, CA! The dates for 2009 are Saturday and Sunday, May 9th & 10th. I've worked out arrangements for lodging with the BlueBird Inn, our normal haunt, and they are looking forward to having us again (crazy people). I decided to try something different for dinner this year, and am making arrangements with Linn's to host our dinner. The Linn family has had their restaurant in Cambria for years and makes wonderful food and some of the best pies on the planet. The Olallieberry pies are my favorite! Also, the local tavern, Mozzi's, has finally reopened with live music and even better beer on tap than before! As always there are great shops, art galleries, etc., to explore once you get to town, as well as some of the most beautiful coastline in California.


Here are the details I have so far -

To make reservations for Saturday night, 5/9, please call the BlueBird and tell them you are with the David Taylor BMW Group. They have a variety of room choices and have given us the following pricing -

Standard Room, One Queen Bed - $88
Standard Room, Two Double Beds - $110
Standard Room, One King Bed - $110
Standard Room, Two Queen Beds - $120
Deluxe Room, One King or Two Queens - $160 (these have garden and creek views, balconies or patios, and fireplaces)
Deluxe Suites - One King Bed - $200 (Has separate living room, creek and garden view, fireplace, etc.)
They are taking reservations now, so feel free to sign up! The cut-off date for the rooms and rates will be April 10th. After that any remaining rooms will be made available to the public and go back to regular price.

I made arrangements with another motel in Cambria. It's about equal walking distance to the restaurant, saloon, shops, etc.

Dinner - Linn's

Dinner will be at 5:00 p.m. Saturday night at Linn's. This will be a sit-down affair instead of the buffet, and I am working with Aaron Linn on the menu for our group. They have a broad variety of great foods, and their pot pies, meat loaf and fruit pies are the staples that helped make their name. They also have great steaks specials for dinner quite a bit of the time. I'll provide more information on this as it gets closer to the date.


Once you get your room reserved please add your name to the attendee list on this thread so I can get a headcount for dinner.

I'm really looking forward to the ride and seeing all of you again, and hopefully meeting some new folks as well! We've had great fun on this ride over the years so come on out and join us for a good ride and good times!

Cambria and Fort Bragg are alway fantastic. First class even. So, I can't say no. I am working on a plan to ride hwy 36 and then down the coast to Cambria and the same to get back. Just trying to stir the NW pot a little. Hwy 36 should be free of snow by may right?

Just giving you a bit of a hard time, didn't want you to think I stopped caring. :D 36 should be OK (barring Mark's pics) but if the weather is iffy you can alway do the lost coast and the Avenue of the Giants as a backup.

Well, I must say that I am supremely impressed with the turnout for this year's ride! 68 folks from at least 6 states, and it's not even February yet!

For those of you who have been on the ride before, you probably know Eric, the youngest son of the family who owns the Bluebird (he rides a Kawasaki 650R). Well, he also plays in a band, and his band is playing at Mozzi's Saloon that night! Mozzi's finally reopened this past year and is directly across the street from where we are having dinner. So something to add just a little more fun to the evening!

Hmm, let's see... Great riding on some of the best roads in Califorinia. Almost guaranteed awesome weather. Tasty and delicious food. Plenty of opportunity to share a beer, shot , cup of coffee, or whatever you prefer; and share it with about 70 new friends! What more could you ask for!?!

Hyper-promotional banter aside :D , I started this as a ride to show a buddy from Texas what California riding was about. About 7-8 of us ended up in Cambria (4 came by car, no less). Sitting around dinner someone said, "we should do this again, this is fun!", so we did. I like to say it's my excuse to ride the PCH at least once a year, but honestly I love to see everyone who shows up every year, and love to meet the new folks just as much. It's mostly just a laid back, smile and laugh till your cheeks hurt, gathering of old friends who love to ride. Funny thing is you don't know some of them yet! :)

I think you need to break away from the curve cowboy thing. Thats for dem south central boyz. You need to think something more California or at least west coast. CCR also was a LT thing. To many other bikes in the mix now.

I just got back from Cambria</ST1:p and I have a few quick updates for the ride coming up in May - <O:p

The folks at the Bluebird mentioned that some folks wanted to get rooms for Friday night as well but the hotel had none available. Part of the group that was going to be there Friday canceled so they now have several rooms available now. Please contact them ASAP if you want to get a room there for Friday night as well.<O:p</O:p

In order to accommodate our group (which has almost doubles in size from what I though it would be), Linn’s has asked if we can move our start time for dinner to 5 p.m. I didn’t think this would be an issue as in the past most folks are in town by 3:30 – 4, and I’ve never seen anyone in this group run away from a meal regardless of what time it was. :) They are very excited to have us and are really looking forward to the event, and I’m, working with them now on the menu. <O:p</O:p

Eric Cooper, the son of the family that owns and runs the Bluebird Inn, plays in a local band called Enso, and they will be playing at Mozzi’s (the local saloon) the night we are in town! They have gotten some great reviews and mentions by some central coast DJs, and Eric is pumped that his band will be able to perform while we’re in town. Hoping to be in town around then, not 100%. May go for the R1200ST they rent at SJBMW...always wanted to try one. So, looking forward to seeing some old friends...most probably. For the dwindling list of LT riders, on the Cambria ride last year I got the LT up to 130 [checked by two GPS] on the flat on the 33 south of the 33/166 junction. Thats my official claim for top speed on the LT :-).

Hey, are we going to have lunch again on the Saturday in that great spot with the terrific view? Also, I'm riding with Wesley because I hear he's good with the "ladies"!

I'm not that keen on the GS though as it seems to have a low saddle and the gonads don't like that particular bike....knew it from when John and I rode it out to UT last CCR.

Thanks, Deb! I double checked with SJBMW and the RT and the GS are available that weekend. I had the RT as my loaner bike while they were doing the 600 mile service on the new GT and it's a pretty solid bike, and has the regular seat. The 1200GS has the factory low seat. Both have saddlebags available.

Sounds like a real treat. Don't forget to do Santa Rosa Creek Rd and Old Creek Rd it's a nice Highway 1 bypass south. Lot's of scenery, oaks, creeks and big farms not to mention twisties. Oh, and as an afterthought, the Cambria Turkeys don't fly.

The Cambria ride is less than a week away! I want to give a quick overview of things for the weekend -

Lodging - Both hotels are in the East Village section of town, which is the south end of town. The Bluebird Inn is located on Main St. about a block north of Burton Dr., the Creekside Inn is on Main St. about 2 blocks south. Both are easy walking distance from each other, Linn's Restaurant, Mozzi's Saloon, and many shops and galleries.

Dinner - Dinner will be at Linn's, located on Main St. about 1/2 a block south of Burton. They will start seating us at 5 p.m. and ask that everyone arrive for dinner by 5:30. They have prepared a wonderful menu for our group (mentioned in other posts) and are really looking forward to having us.

After Dinner Fun - losts of shops and galleries to check out, there's a patio at the Bluebird where folks can gather to visit and have a beer, and many othe things to explore. The local tavern is called Mozzi's Saloon and is directly across the street from Linn's. There will be a live band play Saturday night, and Erik Cooper, an avid motorcyclist and son of the family that owns the Bluebird Inn, is their guitarist. He's a great guy and I hear the band is good, and they are looking forward to having us come check out their show.

I've seen a couple of threads in the Southwest forum with folks meeting up to ride in together. There are a few folks meeting up with me in San Jose at 9:30 Saturday morning at the Starbucks at 129 Bernal Rd. to ride down together as well. If you want to join us send me a PM so I know to look for you.

The National Weather Service has posted hazardous wind advisory for the central coast on Friday and Saturday running 17-24 mph of the northwest with gusts up to 29 mph. Should be a nice tailwind for those coming from the north but a potential sphincter press if/when you have to cross it up. It supposed to dissipate by Sunday morning.

I headed out early this morning, went up to Big Sur and turned around and i think i saw all of you heading north home on my way back down the highway. Took a little bit to shake the cob webs out of my head this morning, too many blue moons!

I am having a hard time adjusting to two days riding on the coast in the 50's and 60's to today crossing the Mohave at 104 degrees.
