I occasionally get emails with pictures I would like to extract to save or send, but when they are from people with Yahoo :v: the pictures cannot be cut. I can do a cut, paste the picture in another email, and it shows as there, but if I try to send it get the "file not found" error. If I try to paste to any other application, no picture. If I look at the properties of the picture, the source is like this:
mhtml:mid://00000002/!cid:1.2680977942@web45411.mail.sp1.yahoo.com
with "alternate text:
cid:74CD6BEC1A3F4370BE958AA55D2A2271@yourf78bf48ce2

This only seems to happen with emails that are from Yahoo accounts.

I have searched for some type of extractor to get these pictures out to save or send, no luck yet.

I am using Outlook Express, Windows XP, and Gmail is my email provider.

Does Anyone here have the answer?

Try to save the photo to your desktop, [Right Click, Save Picture As...]

If that won't work, you can do a screen capture [Control, Alt, Print Screen], then open Paint and paste in the screen shot.
Next just crop out the image you want to save.

If the picture is an attachment, you can always click "File/Save Attachments..."

I usually just resend it to myself.

It is not an attached file, but imbedded in the email. If I highlight and try to cut and paste, it will paste into another email, but with the "cannot find file" error message if I try to send it. It will not paste to any other application if cut from the email.

I just did some more research, and found that the "missing file" is a Microsoft bug. (Imagine that!) It says that the missing file is "mshtml.hlp", but no such file ever existed. Quite a bit about it on some forums now. A Microsoft screw up, which they seem to have NO FIX for! Again, imagine that.

Since my email provider is Google Gmail, I opened it on the web, and can do cut and paste as expected. Not in Outlook Express though. Seems that when Microsoft upgraded IE 6 to IE 7, they screwed up something, and have not been able to fix it. Some have uninstalled IE 7, gone back to IE 6, and solved the problem, only to have Microsoft automatically upgrade them again. :brick:

Guess I will wait awhile and see if it is ever addressed, if not will have to investigate another email client. I have tried Thunderbird in the past, and still have it on my system, but really did not like it. Had problems that no one on the Thunderbird forums had any help for. Gave up and went back to Outlook Express. It works just fine, except for this current known bug. It is not a huge problem, only exists in a small percentage of emails I get, that seem to have all come through Yahoo at some point in their forwarding life.

David, Outlook Express should have a way of saving the file to your file system (Desktop, or wherever). I'd try right-clicking on it, or looking around. It's most likely hidden in there somewhere.

If all else fails, you can do a screen-capture of the picture from your email viewer window. Hold down Control and alt, then press the Print Screen button. That will save the whole email window with the picture. Then open a picture editor program of your choice, create a new image, and paste the contents into it. Crop out the email window dressing, saving only the picture, and voila.

Cheers,
-joel

Since there are no attachments, just imbedded pictures, there is nothing to save other than the original email file. No help there.

Since I found that I can go to my gmail account on the web and extract them just fine, that is what I will do on the very few emails that have the problem. I rarely use gmail through the web, as I automatically download all my emails with Outlook Express. Maybe one day in the future Microsoft will address this. Not holding my breath though.

For what it is worth, I've gone mostly to GMail as my primary email. I rarely check or use my Outlook anymore and my email is much more accessible than when I was tied to a client. I be interested if you see any significant downside. I haven't.

I be interested if you see any significant downside. I haven't.I like the way I have all my incoming emails directed to the correct folders. I have about 40 folders in OE where all my incoming mails are directed, so all emails from family, friends, etc. are in their own individual folder. I do not like gmail's "labels" method at all. I do not understand why Google refuses to use a folder method to sort emails. Gmail is my only email address, I just use OE as my access to it. Totally transparent that gmail is being used. However, if necessary, I can log into gmail anywhere to read it, which is good when I am not home.

I like the label system, it is working for me. I like the ability to use more than one label on a single message.

I use my ISP (Roadrunner) with Outlook being the primary email for the family. I only download messages manually from Outlook and usually only in the evening so Gmail has a chance to get a copy of them and I use my Gmail as my primary personal email.

Anyway, this isn't helping your picture problem. Thanks for the small fray in your thread. Interesting to compare "strategies."

YAAAHOOOOOO! Great for IM... not so great for emailing pics outside itself. Simplify... I've gotten to the point I use my old hotmail account to push files back and forth... avoid outlook express period... and while we're on the topic... avoid Microsoft Explorer ALL TOGETHER... Firefox Mozilla.... free...have had heeps less problems with it...and with Mozilla's open system... there are a bizillian add-ons with which you can personalize it into a very cool portal. And one more while I'm out there.... try IRFANVIEW... free..a very simple but ROBUST image editing tool that packs a real punch.. great for ripping desktop images.. etc.. and converting files from one format to another with ease. Got an FTP site? try FILEZILLA.. another great tool ... free... easy to use.. uploading pics is easy as click and drop!

There are a couple sites I use that will not work well with Firefox. I do use Outlook Express all the time though.

Not in Outlook Express though.
THAT is the entire problem. OE has way too many bugs and faults, I won't use it. Try Eudora, it has some neat tricks built in. Like if someone sends you an HTML virus imbedded in an E mail, Eudora extracts it and makes it an attachment. http://www.eudora.com/

Except for this little problem I have not had any issue with it, used multipl times every day, for years. So, I don't know what you mean by "way too many bugs and faults". It is only a bug or fault if it affects you in any way, and so far this is the only one I am having, and it seems to be related to IE 7 more than OE. I rarely use IE, so my best approach is probably to uninstall it. I use Firefox almost exclusively. The only reason I have used IE lately is when I need to do something that will only work with IE. Yes, there are things that unfortunately REQUIRE IE. :(

Well, as mentioned in my other post, you can receive an HTML virus imbedded in the E mail that will execute when the E mail is opened to read. Then there was M/S's "fix" for people opening attachments that were infected...the default setting was not to allow ANY attachments to be opened. That one was done in one of their updates. There are other vunerabilities and security holes in IE that just don't exist in Eudora, much like the IE vs Mozilla story.
