View Full Version : Using my new lift.

I got my new Handy lift yesterday and today I am figuring it out. The RS feels fine on there on the centerstand but the LT is a little wobbly. I don't like it just clamped in the tire vise but when I put it on the centerstand it rolls back 8" out of the vise so it can't be used. I don't see any good spots to ratchet it down to the lift from other than the footpeg mounts. What do you do?
Should I just use the centerstand with a strap to the front wheel to keep the stand from folding up?

Perhaps an extension placed in front of the vise so you can roll forward enough to allow proper wheel placement once brought up onto the center stand.

You just discovered a "short" lift table,s down fall. Mine is 93" not sure how long yours is
IMHO you have two choices.
Do as I do. I either use the Condor mounted to the lift or I just use the front stop that sticks out a bit, it came with mine. I use it to "park by feel", pull up to it use the center stand, and use the front forks to strap it down. To be honest I did the 12K on it, and new shocks, and never twisted anything hard enough to be scared. The tie downs helped in compressing for the torque on the front shock, but even then it did not take a lot.
Don't be afraid to drill into that metal to get mounting points using good eye bolts. Just make sure you arent hitting and sub frame :o Hell I have holes for the Condor, a harbor freight tire changer to break the beads, and multiple eye bolt holes.
But I bought a Greg Smith so am inclined to drill all I want on it

Joe...great to hear that you now have a lift. You will love it! For the LT, I roll the bike as far forward as I can with the vise wide-open allowing the wheel to go deeper into the vise that with it being tight. Then put it on centerstand. This will usually leave a bit of the wheel in the vise (though not as full I as wish). From there you can tie it down for safety as shown in the attached pic.

Nice pic of the lift. Does you wife ever wonder what happened to her muffin pan? Nice idea, that.

Gettin kinda personal aren't we?
I don't see how the length of the lift matters in this case. The bike always rolls back 8" when going up on the centerstand so there is no way you can use the vise and centerstand unless you roll it 8" beyond the vise and then it comes back into it.

Sorry bout the "short" thing :rotf:
You are correct in it does not matter using the vise. You can have no center stand in the vise, and need someone to crank the vise.
Condor no center stand but you need only drive into it and it locks up tight and I have no fears getting off the bike once I am in the Condor. Again no center stand.
This is how I have learned to work on my LT. The advantage of a longer table is when you loose those 8" (sorry to hear that ;) ) on the center stand, the back of the bike is still well on the table.
I use a Black Jack, but any low jack will be your friend on the table to raise or lower the bike as needed for certain tasks, once you remove the skid plate and find frame.
I have my eye bolts and use them on the front forks with straps.
I don't use the vise or the Condor on the lift.

The black "park by feel" piece I was talking about:

And the rear on the table after loosing 8" :o

I don't have a lift but was looking at the picture and was wondering. What if you anchored the front wheel in the vise and used a floor jack with some rags or a piece of carpet on the lift pad under the paralever arm to lift the back of the bike so you can deploy the center stand then take the jack out. If this sounds stupid I'm sorry I don't have a lift yet.

Well, I'll tell ya what...an LT ain't much to look at with her "clothes" off...that's for sure...church goer or not!!!!!
But, I can get an LT on the centerstand and still have enough wheel in the vise to clamp!!!! Must be the difference in the brands.
Truth is, most LT'ers can't get one on the centerstand whilst she's on level pavement...much less while on a lift! :histerica :histerica
Except you cheaters with the fancy electro/hydraulic ones. :lol8:

Man...that muffin pan has held far more bike parts than it ever held muffins. Got several of them and work EXCELLENT!!!! You can write on them and then you know where everything goes.

Was hopin' you'd be seein' the good nature humor in that there. I gots no problem boostin QuickSilver on the center stand. It's the gettin' it off'n the stand what is the trick. Tried doin' it from standin' on the ground on the left side. The scoot's swooped off the center stand as pushed it forward and proceeded to flop over onto the right side pullin' all my considerable tonnage right along on top of the left side. Since then only use the center stand for maintainin' and never for routine parkin'. Don't know about them fancy platformin' lifts. That be too rich for this ole geezer. Anyhoo, hat's off to you for that there dazzlin' wrench bendin'.

Joe,
I did a little modification to my tire vise. I extended the stop out about 7" from normal factory setting. This allows me to push the front tire past the vise and then rock back up on the center stand.
a NOTE of CAUTION: The brake discs extend past the edge of the tire so be VERY careful that the vise is open wide enough and the front tire is well centered.
I can attempt to take some pictures if you are interested.

I've had my LT on my Handy Lift many times, and always on the center stand with no extra straps. It takes a lot to make the stand fold up. I even saw Grif climb up on on LT in mid-air once. I would not recommend it, though! :)
