We have decided to ride through Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire area Aug 21-24. Rode through Lake Champlain, Montreal area in 2002. Anyone have any must see places they can recommend. We will also be leaving Mass for CCR Aug 28. Anyone else planning to leave around that time. Thanks Rob

The Green Mountains and the coast of Maine, dont much care for areas with a lot of people. Like remote areas with great views and good roads. I'm trying to talk my wife in retiring in New England. She liked Lake Placid area last time because the ride was so relaxing. Thanks for asking! Rob

Rob,
We spent two weeks in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont this summer. The few days you are planning won't even get you started. I got some great suggestions from CharlieVT before the trip and probably didn't get to half of the routes and "notches" he suggested, we simple ran out of time. We literally road from daylight to dark every day we were there including getting over to the Bay of Fundy in Canada (an amazing sight to see). Each state offers something so different, it's would be hard to suggest any one area over another. Beautiful coast lines, mountains, back woods, farm land, small towns and the folks we met were great every where we stopped. I can tell you that we will be returning again, enjoy.

PM me before you get here. I live in NH and will be glad to spend a day taking you up through Evans Notch and through the Green Mountains up to Pittsburgh. There is a great River Ride down the Vermont side of the Connecticut River. It'll take a day and is about 2% of the riding available here in NH.

I'll leave the New England stuff to others who live there, but whatever you do, make sure when riding from the NE down to CCR, you do the whole length of the Blue Ridge Parkway (starting in Waynesboro, VA - you can skip the Skyline Drive, its too slow), then the Foothills Parkway/Deals Gap/Cherohala Skyway. That will be a memorable finale to your NE adventure. I can give you a nice routing from eastern NY/western MA down to GA.

As one of the *few* K12 riders in Maine (who belong to this site), I can tell you that we do have plenty of remote areas here in Maine. I am a 48 year native, who was born "downeast", and raised in "the county". I now live in central Maine (Lewiston). I have driven pretty much everywhere in Maine, from the coast, to the western mountains. (in some spots in the western mountains, it is NO MOTORCYCLES at all, so be aware!)
If my wife and I are around (she rides as well), let me know when you will be in Maine, and we will treat you and your wife to a *real* Maine shore dinner. Steamed clams, bakes stuffed lobster, and homemade cheesecake. I have 2 daughters that are CIA graduate chefs, so we certainly know how to cook.
Ask Edgar Tanner, he and Debbie were at my home 18 months ago when he was in Maine :)

PM me for more info if you like....

Well after me and my wife read all the posts we decided that we should skip CCR this year. We will spend some time in Mass. visiting family then take 2 days to get to Montreal. We plan to take 3 days from there to Bar Harbor so we have some time to look around. We decided to take the ferry to Yarmouth Nova Scotia, then visit Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island areas for 4 days. Then head back along the coast of Maine to Mass. So if anyone has any ideas I would be greatful. Mark thanks for the offer I will zip mail you. I have some questions about living in Maine. I'm retiring in 3 years and need to get out of California, to many people. Thanks

Rob, since you will be Mass, and head up to Bar Harbor, here is a word doc that lists some the stops we made a few years ago. Enjoy.

When in NH you must go ride thru the northern part of the State and stay at the Mount Washington Hotel. The area is beautiful no matter what the weather does. My wife and I were up there this past spring for a business meeting that I was attending(she rode the coat tails and got a free weeks vacation). We did not own our LT but had my 78 /7 and we had a blast just zipping around the countryside and if you dare you can ride to the top of Mt Washington or take the Cog Railway. I have not doen the ride yet but plan to. Mt Washington is very close to maine as well so it would not be out of the way at all. Just a place to consider.

Enjoy and I think NE is a great place to live. IF you like all types of Weather. Yesterday it was 60 and rainy tomorrow it will be 55 and clear. Might be a nice day for a ride if I wasn't going to the International MC Show in NYC.

....is the title of a delightful old book of black and white photos of old rural Vermont and quaint sayings:
Q: "Say mister, nice place you got here, you lived here all your life?"
A: "Not yet."

When you figure your plans, passing through Vermont on your way to somewhere else (well... okay,), or here to see Vermont (a small state with lots of character), let me know. I'll try to give you a scenic route that gets you through without having missed too much, or the leisurely route that gives you the delightful detours. Give me point of entry and destination and I will try to give you something that works for your time sched. Maybe I can even hook up with you for a brief "guided tour".

If you have the time you just might be able to "get it".
A young boy walks into a small town general store (the type of which is fast disappearing but still exists) and asks the store keeper: " Say Mister, you got any of that new breakfast cereal everyone's been talkin' about?"
Storekeeper says: "No..., we don't carry that any more, it sells too fast."

If you get this, you may be able to appreciate the old Vermont State of Mind. If you have an itinerary to keep and you can't slow down, you'll probably miss it, like so many "flat-landers" who vacation through.

If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll try to help you "see Vermont".

If you're looking for places to go in Prince Edward Island, simply google "Top 10 things to do in PEI" and you will get some excellent suggestions from this link: www.peiinfo.com/top10.php .

I will be doing a 2 week tour of the Atlantic Provinces and St.Pierre & Michelon in mid June. I found the above site in my search. Hope it's helpful.

Thanks to the original poster (nashty) and all who have contributed. I will be touring the New England states the week of the BMW MOA National Rally in VT. Not a lot of sight-seeing though; just riding, and riding, and riding... I want to cover as much ground as I possibly can, um . . . just because.

Mark (mconlogue), I would really like to stop by and see you, or perhaps just grab a cup of coffee if you'd care to. And . . . no need to feed me. Then again, I rarely refuse a donated meal. :) PM me or email me . . . please.

your statement makes me curious, just what do you mean? is it no motorcycles allowed? and if so are these public roads? How can this be?

Paper company roads Hans. (attachment 2) Just north of Greenville (an absolutely drop dead gorgeous area), it becomes private roads, lots of private roads. the entire western edge is all unorganized territories.... Now, these paper company roads are gravel, but WIDE, flat and smooth. The timber trucks regularly do 80+ mph hauling over 100,000 pounds, so no bikes are allowed, and they are gated after dark. Wildlife abounds, moose, deer, bear, and did I say MOOSE????

Mt Katahdin (attachment 1) (is a state park that does not allow any 2 wheel vehicles, nor any 3-wheeelers or 4 wheelers of the off road kind. That is a non starter, I have tried, and they have no sense of humor at all. It is a wilderness area, and pristine, so I understand their issues. (Yeah, like I am going off roading on the K12).

I live at :
N44° 5.701'
W70° 10.208'

in central Maine.

I am taking an ethical hacking course (yup, hacking) this week, and a disaster recovery course next week, but send me an e-mail to touch base. If we are around (we might be on a road trip to dallas again) we will certainly have you come by.
