Greetings: Living in Kansas City with a new 09LT and my daughter asked if we could take a road trip while she is home from University the second and third week of March (09). She mentioned San Antionio, Roswell or Tucson for the outing. I was wondering where I may search for info that folks may have compiled info worth sharing. Any thoughts?

During that time of year you need to stay in the low deserts to keep both of you happy.

If it was my daughter - and you're leaving from Kansas - I would do one of two things:

Buy her the BEST wind and waterproof riding gear you can find along with a heated JACKET underneath and head due South as soon as you can.

OR:

Ride to Tucson by yourself and fly her in. Flying to Phoenix is probably cheaper, but the day trips, as well as finding interesting things to do - compared to Tucson - SUCKS.

The other areas you mention can have easily have snow, STRONG winds and very cold temps in March.

Visit www.visittucson.org (http://www.visittucson.org) for some great ideas on what to do.

What Ron said about buying her some good gear.

I used to take my daughter on long rides starting when she was about 10, wouldn't trade those times for anything. She is now 21 and those chances to go for a Father/Daughter ride are very far and few between.

Ron is 100% correct. I've ridden all of those areas extensively. If you do fly into Phoenix you will be pretty much restricted to heading south from there since as you go north the elevation increases rapidly and there is a better than even chance you will hit snow before you get to Flagstaff. So unless she is a real trooper, try the fly into Tuscon route. Even if she is, you will spend as much outfitting her for the weather as it takes to fly her in. Have Fun. Some of my fondest memories are motorcycle trips with my son.

The only problem with Phoenix is when everything is shut down by the wind.

Maybe once or twice a year. Not very likely .....

Do appreciate the recommendations, as I am not familiar with the southwest United States. Thank You!

I am a bit surprised on the comment just above this entry. Never ran across a post on this forum with these types of messages. I am gonna say a prayer for this person.

When you say San Antonio, do you mean San Antonio, TX?

Blasting straight south will not only be boring, but could be a might airish and definitely windy.

BUT... once you get here you could have 80 degree days, or it could be wicked cold. You never know. The Hill Country of Texas is always beautiful and green and the roads interesting. Sandar the mag and I live smack in the middle of it on 6 acres, we have spare bedrooms if you decide to meander this way.

Psst- the feller who made the post was joking, in bad taste, but a joke.

I agree about Tucson riding versus phoenix but lots of altitude there, I hit a patch of snow heading up the mountains (can't remember the road name, canyon something, just NE of tucson, south to north route off Ina road) riding 2 up last week, yikes!! But the eye candy, daym, I think thats the nicest set of mountains I've ever seen and I've seen a lot, nicer than sedona by a long shot IMHO.

Also have a place in NW phoenix if you need a stayover, just west of I-17, plenty of room and accomodations.

Its great to ride with my daughter, not that we get much of a chance these days either...my boy is too tall, his legs are in the way so he has to stay home or ride his own (not) :histerica nothing like a set of knees in your back!!

Don't forget tombstone, I like that little town for some reason
