I don't know how many miles were on the oil my when I first changed it. I had rode 6000 miles since my wife bought my LT for me and decided to change engine, trans & fd oil before trip to Minnesota. The FD oil came out black but no metal just a little fine powder on the drain plug. I got back & changed it again at 3700 miles black oil again nothing on drain plug. Drained oil into clear mason jar at 1500 miles and let set for two weeks and what looked like black is very dark green. Oil is Valvoline 80-90 light gold new. Is this normal?

The aluminum FD case discolors the lube pretty quickly.
My LT and GS doit.

A few fellow LT owners have mentioned that they change their FD fluid frequently,, more often than advised by BMW.. Due to the issues with FD failure. Dont know if it helps, but it cant hurt.

I changed mine recently at a 6000 mile interval and the old looked pretty similar to the new lube. Nominal amount of fuzz on the drain plug.

I use Valvoline full synthetic 75W90 and the only time it came out dirty was just before my FD failed on me. Have you spun your rear wheel on the center stand to see if there is any roughness in it? You might want to do that.......... :(
PS I changed mine 2 days before the failure and all I had was a little fuzz on the magnet.

You don't say what model year LT that you have or how many miles that you have on it. Could be normal or it could indicate a problem.
I have a 2003 LT with 48K miles that I change the FD fluid in every 6k. The fluid is getting progressively lighter with each oil change and the amount of sludge on the drain plug is greatly reduced. I was very concerned after the first fluid change because the oil was so dark and there was a large buildup on the drain plug.

I also use full synthetic 75-90 . I changed it for the first time myself after about 10,000 miles( Dealer had done it previously) . It scared me it came out with what looked like metal shavings all through it . I have since changed it again after about 1,000miles & the oil seemed normal but ther was stiill some metal on the drain plug . It is very easy to change . I will keep changing it just so I can keep an eye on it.

Mine goes in clear and after 6000 miles comes out with a tan color, some sludge on drain plug. I'm using Amsoil. Has been the same both times I changed it. Bike currently has 29,000 miles on it.

My bike is a 2004 LT with 60,000 miles it had 47,700 when I got it. I just bought 75 W 90 Mobil 1 Synthetic and will see what it looks like in a couple of weeks.
Thank's Dave
