Final drive noisy

Hi, can anyone please tell me the best way to check the final drive backlash.
I collected my LT today which is a 2004 model with 15000 miles, but one thing that is worrying me is the amount of noise from the drive when feeding the clutch in and out, there is a definite clunk when doing this... is this normal???

The clunk is normal drive line slack being taken up. The time to worry is that grinding sound and play in the rear wheel. There have not been any documented large bearing failures in the 04 and up bikes like there were in the 99 - 2003 models. There have been some issues but none produce a clunk.


While on the center stand, grab the rear wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and try to wiggle it there should be no movement. Then spin it and feel for smoothness. If these tests are negative - go for ride!
