First time poster. I have a new, to me, 2005 K1200LT. I can't seem to get the MPG/range computer to reset. I have held down the BC button for two seconds, and tried a lot longer. It will reset the average speed. The MPG however goes to 200 for about three seconds and then goes back to 16. Sometimes it reads 17 or 18 for a few seconds before settling at 16. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Paul

I might be stating the obvious here, but under the display on my 04 there are 2 buttons, one reads MODE and the other button reads RESET.
Is this not the same on the 05?

I to am confused  you cant reset distant to empty if that is what you are talking about that is an estimation of fuel left in tank. the bc button is the mode switch on the handle bar. you can only reset your average speed and average mpg select either and push the reset button on the gauge

The Mark II LT uses the bottom of the rocker switch on the left-hand bar as the BC reset so Paul's doing the right thing. The mpg does start at 200mpg but it should very quickly recalculate to a real number. On my bike it usually falls to about 19mpg as I pull away from the pump before steadily increasing.
Having an indication that sticks at 16mpg or so isn't unknown and has been discussed on here before, I'm sure. A search is in order but you may need to have several tries to find what you need. You should check with the old site forums as well, assuming that the search engine doesn't automatically do that. That was in use when I joined in 2004 and this topic came up back then.
Hope this helps,
Keith

If it goes to 16 right away there is a fault. I am sorry I am having a senior moment as I cannot remember what it is that causes that or the fix. It will come to me in time.
Ok I found it.
From a post on the old forum:
Sorry Guys, been a bit too busy the last few days to post, but here's the info.
I've got this fix installed, and it completely solves the problem. It requires removal of the tank and getting into the electrical box. A simple harness with a "filter" is installed -- one wire is connected to a ground terminal in the box, and another is piggy-backed onto Motronic wire pin 26.
(Note in case mother BMW is watching: I did *not* get this info from my dealer (I really didn't!)).
Service Information Bulletin #13 001 05 (022),
Subj: Econometer reading is incorrect
Applicable to vehicles up to VIN ZL 72203.
From the rest of the thread it appeared to be fixed on bikes with VIN number above 72203 - although mine is a 70644 and I have had no problems.
May be worth while to check with your dealer on the bulletin.

On my bike 200 mpg and 16 mpg seem to be extreme ends of the range and default readings when you reset at a standstill. If I reset the BC with the key on and engine not running I get 200 mpg. Makes sense because of zero fuel burn. If I start the bike and reset at idle the reading is usually 16 mpg. Again seems logical because fuel is being burned and no mileage is being counted. Either way when you get moving it eventually adjust and reads fairly accurately. Just my own observations, hope it helps.

It seems that I have a fault. It never budges from 16mpg after the reset. So the question is can I clear the fault somehow?
The bike is a year out of warranty and new to me. I did not plan a dealer visit quite so soon. The mileage/range is really just trivia anyway, but it would be nice if I could fix it. Some variables that might help is that the bike was very low mileage (715). I got it right out of its first service where they replaced the battery, and the fuel pump. I disconnected and reconnected the battery today to see if that would clear faults with no luck.
Thanks,
Paul

See my updated post and here is some more info from the thread:
Thanks for posting this reminder --
For everyone's benefit: This is *NOT* a problem on all the bikes from ZL 72202-back.
It is a *very* sporatic issue, with only a very few bikes (those with a certain electronics module in them -- the SIB sez module was changed on all bikes from 72203-on).
The problem is so rare that my dealer, which is a fairly large volume store, only ordered one "fix" kit, as I was the only one that ever mentioned having the problem.

Sure enough my vin number is a couple of hundred earlier. So I guess I need to see the dealer. Any idea if they will comply with the bulletin outside of warranty at BMW's expense or am I dreaming?

Looks like an easy fix. But, its time consuming to just get to the point where one can remove the tank.
