View Full Version : Songs w/ lyrics about motorcycles and/or riding ONLY!

I know we all have our favorite songs that we like to turn on when we ride. But that's NOT what I'm looking for here. More specifically, I'm looking for songs that contain lyrics about motorcycles, riding motorcycles, and etc... And the lyrics MUST be about riding a bike...not just "riding", or going for "a ride". And NO, 'Born To Be Wild' is not a riding song. Read the lyrics! Oh...and any songs that have vulgar lyrics, I won't be adding them to MY list. You can do what you want to.
Here's my "Riding Songs" playlist as it stands today:
1952 Vincent Black Lightning; Richard Thomson (Live)
Biker Like An Icon; Paul McCartney - (Live)
Bad Motor Scooter; Sammy Hagar - (Live)
Crazy Motorcycle; L.A. Guns
Haley's Got a Harley; .38 Special
Highway 49; George Thorogood
Jesus Rode A Harley; Ugly Kid Joe
Motorcycle Cowboy; Merle Haggard - (Live)
Motorcycle Drive By; Third Eye Blind
Motorcycle Emptiness; Manic Street Preachers
Motorcycle Mama; Sugarcubes
Motorcycle Man; Saxon
Ride; Joe Satriani
Roll Me Away; Bob Seger
Speeding Motorcycle; Yo La Tengo
Still They Ride; Journey
The Motorcycle Song; Arlo Guthrie - (Live)
Wanted Dead Or Alive; Bon Jovi
If you can add to the list, I'd appreciate it. TIA

Lou Reed's "New Sensations" and "Bottoming Out" both qualify quite nicely.
"I love that GPZ so much, you know that I could kiss her."

For me, nothing can top the Richard Thompson song on your list. I've seen Richard live several times and that song always brings the house down!

I've seen Richard live several times and that song always brings the house down! You noticed where it's at on the list, didn't you? :) Not that I put them in any order. But that song is certainly a special one to me. Quite frankly, it haunts me. And don't be surprised someday if you see me pull up to CCR on a 1952! ;)

Funny you should ask that now. We were having lunch in a small town deli today, and the waitress noticed my shirt "You never see a Motorcycle parked in front of a psychiatrist's office." She asked if I listened to George Strait, and before I could answer, launched into a chorus of "Cowboys Like Us" and then explained how she and her roommate argue whether it's about horses or motorcycles. For some reason, the tune to "Spies Like Us" got stuck in my head most of the day . . .

Bob has a lot of "real life" bike music but these are tops on my list."Turn The Page" is a traveling musician song...not a riding song. He's referring to being in a tour bus in that one. "When you're riding 16 hours, and there's nothin' much to do." Yep...definitely a tour bus.
And by "Roll Me On", I'm assuming you meant "Roll Me Away"...which already made my list.

Cool Rider - GreaseNow THERE's a list that has several I didn't have. THANKS! http://www.bigbikeworld.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif Although, I do see a few that are not "true" riding songs. Like "As The Rush Comes". That's a techno song by a group called "Motorcycle"...but the song isn't about riding. (I think it's more about sex.) And the two Allman Brothers songs are also NOT riding songs, along with "Born To Be Wild". They can be insinuated that way, but no real mention of a riding reference in either. Don't mean to be so picky...I'm just anal like that. ;)
Thanks for your time, and the list. Very cool stuff. I'm embarrassed that I missed a few of those. :o

Oh, I knew it didn't strictly fit your criteria, but I thought the whole interchange was kinda funny. Never had a waitress sing to me before. :)
As for songs, how about Ghost Rider by Rush?
"Pack up all those phantoms
Shoulder that invisible load
Keep on riding North and West
Haunting that wilderness road
Like a ghost rider"
Which reminds me, I've just started reading Neil Peart's Traveling Music: The Soundtrack to My Life and Times. This is basically about a trip Neil took to Big Bend National Park in his BMW Z8, and how music and travel have defined and shaped his life. I'll let y'all know how it is after I get a bit further into it.

Did not one of the Allman brothers was killed on a bike hitting a peach truck?
I know the album "eat a peach" came out after one of them died

Don't know if anyone else has heard it, but Arlo Guthrie did a second version of the motorcycle song that talked about the meaning of the pickle...Really funny stuff! The copy I had was recorded in front of a live audience sometime in the late '70s or early '80s.

Ok, this doesn't meet the criteria, but it seems to fit expecially when on a log ride or trip...

Saddle tramp, saddle tramp.
From the song Saddle Tramp sung by Marty Robbins on his Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Sosngs album....

Waitress huh? ;) Does Dayle know about this . . . little . . . incident? :D
You and I both know what Neil was thinking about as he wrote Ghost Rider. I just wish he would've made a better motorcycle reference in the words. I'll have to think about it. It's already in my iPod...obviously. Just not sure it's worthy of "the playlist".

Just a clarification on Cowboys Like Us, It's a Motorcycle song.
Here is a small sample of the lyrics -
I take off time to time
With those crazy friends of mine
Head out on steel horses
With wheels and we ride
IMO - One of the best Motorcycle songs to have come out in the last decade or so.

So that's where that HDDC quote came from. Our waitress didn't get to that verse. :)
And yes Joe, Dayle's always with me for these types of incidents. :D
But yeah, I can see Ghost Rider having some negative connotations. But he came through it. As Dayle says, some people meditate, some pray, and some just ride. It's kind of a zen thing.

Yeah, a zen thing. If you're doing it right. :)
I remember reading a post here where someone described a perfect ride they had where the bike felt good, the roads were great, and they were just in tune with everything and at peace with the world. My first reaction was "Isn't every ride like that?"
OK, maybe not every ride, as we do have to contend with crazy traffic, random weather, and the occasional bike breakdown. But 95% of my time on the bike is like that, where it all just flows and there's no place else you'd rather be.
And yes, I do have a soundtrack for such things, but it's more about how the music feels than what the particular lyrics are. That's why I'm having a hard time coming up with songs that fit Joe's criteria. I just never added that additional restriction into the mix.
Having just driven a cage 1,000 miles over boring interstates, snow-covered passes, and through fog, cold, and rain, all I could think was "man, I miss the bike." That, and the fact that I'd rather take the bike than fly somewhere, speaks volumes.

Didn't see one of my favorites on the list:
Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a harley-davidson
Her long blonde hair flyin in the wind
Shes been runnin half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin with the very air she breathes
Unknown Legend - Neil Young
Harvest Moon
And although not bike related the opening line:
She used to work in a diner, Never saw a woman look finer,
I used to order just to watch her float across the floor
Fantastic.

I don't know if this one makes the cut or not, but I like it. I guess I have a little of both groups in me.
Artist/Band: Ledoux Chris
Lyrics for Song: This Cowboy's Hat
Lyrics for Album: 20 Greatest Hits
(Spoken)
Well there's always been groups of people who couldn't see eye
to eye...an' I always thought if they'd get the chance to sit down and
talk face to face they'd see we all have a lot in common....
Well I was sittin' at a coffee shop, just havin' a cup to pass the time.
Swappin' some rodeo stories with this ole cowboy friend of mine.
When some motor-cycler riders started snickerin' in the back.
Started pokin' fun at my friend hat.
One ole boy said hey Tex, where'd you park your horse.
Now my friend just pulled his hat down low, but they couldn't be ignored.
One husky fella said, I think I'll rip that hat right off your head.
That's when my friend turned around, and this is what he said...
You'll ride a black tornado, 'cross the western sky.
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi, and pin her ears down flat...
Long before you take this cowboys hat...
Now partner, this ole hat is better left alone,
See it used to be my daddy's, but last year he passed on.
My nephew skinned the Rattler, that makes up this ole hatband.
But back in '69 he died in Viet-Nam.
Now the eagle feather was given to me by an ole Indian friend of mine,
But someone ran him down, somewheres 'round that Arizona line.
And a real special lady gave me this hat pin.
And I don't know if I'll ever see her again.
You'll ride a black tornado, 'cross the western sky.
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi, and pin her ears down flat...
Long before you take this cowboys hat...
Now if you leather jacket means to you what this hat means to me.
Then I guess we understand each other, and we'll just let it be.
But if you still think it's funny, well man, you've got my back up against the wall.
But if you touch my hat, you'll have to fight us all...
Well, right then I caught a little sadness in the gang leaders eyes.
And he turned back t'wards the others and they all just sorta shuffled on outside.
But when my friend turned back t'wards me, well I noticed his old hat brim.
Well it was turned up, in a big ole Texas Grin!
You'll ride a black tornado 'cross the western skies,
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it 'til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi and pin her ears down flat,
Long before you touch this cowboy's hat...

Joe,
I really, really tried to stay out of this but I can't take it any longer!
WRT "Turn the page" by Seger part of the lyrics are "well you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road, you can feel the eyes upon you as you're shaking off the cold" - it may be a song about a singer on the road (based on the chorus) but the lines above make it an m/c song (no reason to shake off the cold after being on a bus!) to me :). Throw in "as you smoke the day's last cigarette, remembering what she said" and I just picture a tired biker in a old hotel trying to shake ghosts from his past - I wouldn't know this as fact but I have seen some training videos :).
OBTW, for your list? Check out "Redline" by Saxon - it's definitely a m/c song but when you have time, give the whole album a shot (Power and the Glory) it rocks!

Unfortunately, my criteria for my "riding songs" is very strict and I refuse to bend my rules. There are a few that have been mentioned as of late that I need to revisit. But 'Turn The Page' doesn't cut it Richard. Not for me anyway. Nor does half of the songs that ldrider mentioned.

Just can't remove half as not moto related....
But I will admit that some are there just to make the right hand a little more active in the twisties.

But I will admit that some are there just to make the right hand a little more active in the twisties.MY thread...MY rules! :p And so you don't have to scroll all that way up, I'll copy and paste for ya...cuz I'm such a darn nice guy! :)
"I know we all have our favorite songs that we like to turn on when we ride. You can do what you want to."

OK, to be fair I've combed through all the lyrics of your list and removed the ones that had nothing to do with motorycles and/or riding.
Here's what's left:
Billy Joel - Motorcycle Song.mp3
Cruzados - Motorcycle Girl.mp3
Ezy Rider - Jimi Hendrix.mp3
Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes.mp3
Storey Sisters - Bad Motorcycle.mp3
The Jalapenos - Mean Motorcycle.mp3

I am totally unaware of any version of "Freeway Jam" that has lyrics.

IMHO lyrics are only the extension of the music. If you can't apreciate the music, the Lyrics are meaningless.
I guess I've "sung" Bethoven, Mozart, etc before, without actually pronuciating (in english anyway) words.
Do you "sing" an opera or is it just music?
I concede you will not find published lyrics for Freeway Jam, but, also would hate to miss it in a variety of music played by riding......my two-cents.

Joe,
I am a lifetime musician, so I do appreciate music without lyrics. In fact, I am currently recording a new CD this winter of my own. Most of the songs are lyric-less. :)
Didn't mean to smack ya with my post. Just bring attention to the fact that I created this thread in search of songs and/or musics with a very specific and narrow criteria in mind. That's all. Didn't mean to offend.

Don't forget "sturgis" by Zwarte
and another tune on that cd that isn't really a ride tune is "Lucy"
after you listen to it, you'll see why I say take a listen.. :bmw: ..we shore like it up here..
and an album from "73.. featuring if not the greatest, one of the greatest guitar players of all time.It needs to be along on the ride, for me. When I'm parked and this is playin, peeps come up to me and ask about it and I say"yes, it's him..one hint>. "have you ever loved a woman". :bmw: .and if any of you say you know, tell me the story behind have you ever loved a woman..
datin myself, huh..
this album/cd would be a gift..hard to find now, as I got mine on ebay from Europe..partied to it in HS and College..

I would like to know who else knew about Fred Eaglesmith's "Indian Motorcycles" - we Fredheads are few and far between. An excellent song, BTW.

An excellent song, BTW.It didn't show up in this thread until my revised list (see post #35 (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=29002&postcount=35), song #19). Don't know where I found that song, or who told me about it...but I've listened to it many times on the road now. Yea, I like it too. It has a real nice feel to it.
