"...it is much easier to have some vague notion about any subject, no matter what, than to arrive at the real truth about a single question, however simple that many be." René Descartes (1596-1650), Rules for the Direction of the Mind (1629)

Hmmm, I think, sometimes I have only vauge notions. Maybe that'll be my new-year's resolution -- have more real truth and fewer vauge notions.

Searching for the truth takes courage. Each of us must be open to the painful growth process of tearing down what we firmly held as the truth only to find out that what we've been taught as children and held in highest esteem must change. The inevitablility of tearing down our own beliefs causes much pain. There is no growth in searching for the truth unless each allow ourselves to become vulnerable. Test each new piece of information against our own truth table.

Test each new piece of information against our own truth table. So much for "truth". One must test a piece of information against something far greater than OUR own truth table, for something to be considered "the truth". "Our own truth table" changes too much. Over a given amount of time. I like "truth" that NEVER changes. Some people aren't quite as picky. I would call those people "relativists". And the "relative truth" is all they really care about. I simply have no use for relative truth.

Aren't you suppossed to be putting a new front fender on or something Joe? ;)

Realtive truth & situational ethics don't work for me. There are to complex and unpredictable for me I guess.

Once again, I'm with Joe - one simple unchanging Truth. It's right or wrong, black or white, on or off -- no maybes, no greys, etc. Problem is sometimes, I don't like the answer...

I dunno. What is the 'one simple unchanging Truth'? Can your Truth be different than my Truth? If so, how can that be? If not, which is wrong? Must we both have the same Truth?

And if I don't like the answer, it may prompt me to dig a deeper -- to keep looking for the 'Truth'. But, if I like the answer, I often stop there. So, if I like the answer, is it a Truth? Is something not a Truth if I don't like the answer? Put it another way: is it become a 'Truth' when I like the answer. What if you don't like the answer: is it still a 'Truth'?

At the risk of opening another religious debate, which I really do not wish this to become, the same questions apply to religions. Or more broadly, philosophies. Someone's philosophical truth may be that the world (natural, physical, man-made, some combination) is too complex and random-- just do your best. Another's may be that there is great order and structure to the world and a person's place is to fit into that structure as there is nothing else to do -- you can't influence anthing other than your own small sphere.

OOOHhhhhhh this is making my head hurt (which is sometimes requried). I think I'll go take my boy to ride dirt bikes.....
