I rode a 2002 LT tonight for about an hour. I own a Triumph Rocket III so the LT is a LOT different in many aspects. I think I can get used to it...I especially like the touring aspect with all the frills....smooth...comfy....quiet...etc. There's not many for sale that I can find so I have not idea what they're worth. Can you give me a price "range" that would be a decent deal? It's a 2002 LTC. CD, Radio, Cassette, Direction mirrors, Custom seats. Two owner, low mileage.
Any problems with the 2002's?
Your advice is appreciated.

I paid for a 99 in 2004 for $11500. It had the intercom and GPS, the two items I was looking for. It had 15K when I got it and now has 54K. It has been a great motor and love it every day. Took me to Alaska and back without a problem in 07. I did have too put a drive shaft a while back for unknown reason, but that is unknown when you buy used. Still I would not trade the LT for anything else.

I would not go over $10k, but that is me.
How low is the mileage?
Condition of tires?
When was the last major service done? who did it?
When was the brake system last bled?
When was the valves last checked?
If all those answers are satisfactory and you have the $ then go for it.

It's VERY clean. 18 mo's ago, the owneer took it to the dealer for service. Everything checked....fluids changed...new tires. It has only 6800 miles on it. I phoned the dealer and they say the NDSA book says it's worth $8100 but I'm assuming that's their trade-in number.
JUSt not crazy about the "green" color. What's a paint job? 2k?

Colour is important, I sold my last bike because I just couldn't get along with the paint...and a couple of other things.
2002 model should be $8200-10000 depending on mileage, no problems yet.

Check http://www.nadaguides.com/, they have a motorcycle section.
However having just went through the research phase and purchased a 2004 last month (and pricing other years) I would not pay more than 10k for a 2002 - depending on features / farkles / mileage. (That may even be a little high)
Another thing to consider is the Final Drive issue. I have read (and I'm sure if I'm wrong, I WILL be corrected ;) ) model years 2003 & 2004 have had the least amount of problems. For a small difference in price, you may be better off going up a year or two.
Check Craigslist, but be careful. When I purchased mine last month, there were no LT's for sale around me. I used Craigslist and looked all over the east coast. I ended up driving 200 miles to pick it up.

There are always some LTs for sale on Ebay. I bought mine out of Oklahoma City............. :)

If the bike comes with an extended "warranty" (more like a service contract) it is always a big plus.
I would not spend more than 8-9K for an 02, but that is just me.
You may also be due for a new battery ($120.00 average).
Other than that the LTs do not age.

RocketRon,
I am in the same boat as you trying to decide what to do and what to pay for a new to me LT. Thanks for the post... the answers you have received have been helpful to me as well.... especially regarding price.

FWIW, I paid $12,500 for my 2004 last month. It came with:
8,800 Miles
Comm System
CB
Navigation
Muth Mirrors
PIAA Lights
Z-Technik Arm Rests
All in addition to the regular LT features (Heated Seats, Heated Grips, 6 Disc Changer, etc...)
After all was said and done, I feel I paid a little bit too much. I think it should have been more in line with 11,5 or 12 even. But it was a quick transaction so in hindsight it was worth the extra to get the bike quickly and enjoy the rest of summer. :sun:

I bought mine off Craigslist, I just started searching all the cities and different search criteria. k1200lt k1200 lt and k1200, craigslist is very particular in its search criteria. Each search returns different results. I have been pretty happy with mine. I have an 03 with 33000 miles when I bought it a couple of months ago and I paid 11,200 for it .

I bought my 99Lt with 22k on it on ebay for $8,400 last June. It came with intercom and an almost brand new top line ARAI helmet with J&R headset (same color as the bike). I took a risk as I did not know much about LTs or any BMW for that matter at that time and what to pay attention to. The bike had been kept 3 years in a climate control storage as the previous owner had health problem and could not ride it anymore. He kept it charged and started it every month though. I was lucky as it turned out to be a very good bike in really good condition. I got it checked by BMW after the purchase, got the fluid changed first and recently had the 24k service done. BMW told me that the bike was in perfect shape. A lot of people think the bike is new and are amazed when I tell them it is a 9 years old bike.
In retrospect and after knowing more about LT prices I may have paid a little bit more than I should have for the year but I am very happy with my purchase and I have absolutely no regret. I put almost 4k miles on it since and I love it more and more every day.

Well, I guess I'm "almost" one of YOUS GUYS! I made the deal today and will take delivery in a couple of days.
Now, If I can just get used to it. SO DIFFERENT from what I'm used to. I'll probably be bugging you all with questions about this thing.
First of all, the windscreen tends to fog up. I'm thinking of a new screen that does the funny little curve at the top. Any suggestions?
The other thing I'm interested in.....
I hate the idea of one leg position. What's available for "highway pegs" where I can change positions of my knees and legs?
Thanks for all your help!

Mornin', Ron - congrats on the new ride. Enjoy and be safe.
For some quick info, I did a search in the 'Technical' drop down list, under the K1200LT 'FAQ' clicker and came up with this as a start (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/faq.php?faq=k1200lt_faq_modify#faq_k1200lt_faq_accessories). Take a look around the rest of the site, as time permits, and I'm confident you'll find info to help you to personalize your new ride, as well as keeping it in top shape, and assisting with the necessary maintenance projects. You've got a great group of folks in your locale that are willing to help with any info you need, as well as the bi-annual get together they do up at the Iron Horse Lodge (see the current thread running on that event, in your regional forum).
Best regard, Ron. And welcome to the community.
