I was coming back from the Moto GP in Indy yesterday. Decided to stop in Farmington, IL to see my ailing 92 year old father-in-law in a nursing home. Passed the entrance to the Nursing home he's in and went to make a U-turn. Decided to give myself some extra space my turning into someone's driveway. I was going to go across a narrow piece of yard that bordered an intersecting road then complete the U-turn on that road.
This turned out to be a bad idea. My front tire disappeared into a hole in the yard that was probably 18"deep and which, obviously, I did not see.
The bike stopped immediately, needless to say. Fortunately I was going so slow, it was not very jarring. But there was no way I was going to get her out without help. Called my wife who called her sister who called her nephew who showed up with his truck a few minutes later. Also, a very nice older gentlemen and an X-biker showed up.
We attached a strap to the frame of the bike underneath and gently extracted her from the hole.
Apparently, no damage at all. I drove her home later and did not feel anything amiss at all even at 80 or so.
Not sure what I learned from this except maybe it's not a good idea to cross unknown grassy ground -- but if you do, do it slowly.
I tried calliing some guys from the annonymous book, but the only one I reached was also still enrout from the races in Indy.
