I have a 2002 LT and a friend is trying to help fix it but would like to know of things to look out for when removing the back half out the motor. He has a shop and is very good at fixing bikes. It is stuck in 4th gear and had to be towed He feels that it is the shifting spring of the shift mechanism that needs to be replaced. Can someone please help ? I know Mr Healy has taken the motor out before and there are many others out there that could help. I live in NE PA the bike is at VPEracing you can find them on line.
Thanks in advance

look up "slave cylinder" on here, you will find out how to at least get to the slave cylinder, from there I would highly suggest you get a clymer manual on how to proceed . This is not a job for the weak but it can be done, take lots of photo's, keep all the bolts and screws in small baggies and that way it is easier to get it all back together. It should take take about 6 hours to get to the point of transmission removal, a bit longer to get it all back together as you have to keep up with the torque values of certain bolts. if you have questions ask away on here. You will need a few special tools, ie 30mm cut away socket, 12mm allen and a few others if you dont have them.

This is one of the better threads on clutch/Tranny removal.

http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17051&highlight=clutch+photos

Now...if he does not have a shop manual, he should not be performing this procedure, I don't care how much experience he has. To get into the tranny and rebuild it on this machine is not something to be taken lightly. I have removed 2-3 trannys but cannot imagine anyone trying to do the job correctly without a manual. Especially the rebuilding part.

Hope the link helps.

Well since you have a trike there is no swing arm to remove or final drive. The tough part is dropping the rear of the tranny/engine assy to clear the frame. We usually block the engine and raise the back of the bike but I am not sure how you would do that with a trike.

I have to ask did you fully inspect the shift linkage? Just want to make sure the problem is not there before you pull the tranny.
