Let's say you're in the boonies and you break down. Can you signal for help without have 911 medical etc respond? Will someone help if it's not a medical emergency?

Or is this item just for emergency's?

Let's say you're in the boonies and you break down. Can you signal for help without have 911 medical etc respond? Will someone help if it's not a medical emergency?

It's actually for both.

SPOT has 4 buttons on it.

1) On/Off - This one powers the unit on and off.
2) OK - This one sends an OK signal to whoever you have set up on your OK list.
3) HELP - This one sends a "Send Help" signal to whoever you have set up on your Help List.
4) 911 - ONLY use this for life threatening or other critical emergencies. It's going to notify the GEOS International Emergency Response Center of your exact location and that you need assistance and they are going to send a team out to grab you.

For the OK & Help groups you can configure the messages to be whatever you want (up to 115characters).

For example my messages are:

OK - "Everything's great and going as planned"
HELP - "I've got a NON life threatening problem, please send help"

The OK & Help Groups can be configured with whoever you want to have listed on them and you can enter either email addresses or mobile device.

When you hit the OK or HELP button your message is sent to whoever you have listed on the list (each list can be different) and they get your message with your GPS location.

On top of that there is a tracking service you can subscribe to (at an additional fee) where you can publish a web page that people can track you during your ride..

Hope that helps..

If you sent a need help message, I assume the unit sends your gps location info to that person?
How does that person get help to you then? Give a tow truck the gps location info?

Exactly :thumb:

You can see from this picture that the person is sent a message that has the time the message was sent, the nearest town, and how far away the nearest town is.

Then, when they follow the link in the message they will go to a page that shows a map, with aerial view, of where the message was sent, and their long-lat location.

I plan to get a SPOT for that cross-country trip I keep thinking about. Then I thought, with my wife going to Vietnam for a month, maybe it'd be useful for her, but it seems the coverage stops just short of the main part of Vietnam. Now I have to come up with another reason I need it now.

:lol8:

You could tell her it's to keep track of YOU while she's in Vietnam

These things are really cool. Good friend of mine just did a solo ride up to and all around Alaska and Yukon territory. I logged in every day to see his progress.
