Noticing more than a few posts of broken parts, cracked fittings, slice in fuel lines etc., I removed the tank and had the dealer change the filter for $20 or whatever it was. Even so, ran into issues I wish I had known about.

The small U shaped hoses are about $70, each!

I had the plastic unions, which had I known that, would have replaced when doing the job.

I did not have money for the U hose, so I bought HP OEM BMW 3' section for about $20. Had I known all that, I would have had the dealer install the crimped end on the tank.

After all was said and done, and I had to replace the non-high pressure hose I did use first, and then replaced that with the BMW OEM HP hose, with the tank still on the bike (yep, that was fun)........I still ended up with the fuel gage not working properly when the job was done.

I have since read quite a few others have had issues with the gage not working, and that had nothing to do with replacing the filter or removing the tank.

I could not risk having a leak from the filter at the tank. It was worth the peace of mind having an experienced mechanic do the job, not that it is not possible. I just did not need any more issues to deal with.

Next time around, if there is one, I am putting a second 3" section of fuel line on, which then allows me to move the tank around, with everything still connected, and they will be crimped on. I will also replace the plastic unions with metal ones, not the QD's, which I have read more than a few of those have failed.

I've done it once. it was a fair amout of work but I did it in conjunction with a whole host of other tasks--plugs, valve check, radiator fluid, air filter--I'm not sure if I see the need to do this as often as the maintenance schedule calls for. Why does that task need done so often with this machine and not others? Talked to a few mechanics and they say as long as you have not had to put in questionable gas this an an over done item...
