At what tread depth do you replace your rear tire? I think I might be replacing too early do to the weight of the bike. Just want to see if I can get a few more miles out of it. I am usually two up with gear when on the road.

I replace them when they hit the wear bars.

I replace them when they get close to the wear bars or start to cup. Tires tend to wear very fast when they get close to the end. I want good rubber under me with only two tires to ride on........ :)

Some do the penny test, if you can see Lincoln's head its time to replace.

the real question is: What is your bacon worth ? As cheep as I am, It takes a long time to recover mentally from sliding across the black top. Replace when you think it is time to or before.

BMW recommended minimum tread depth for front is 2 mm and for the rear is 3 mm.

Thanks all. I guess I'm replacing at the right time. Just trying to get a couple more miles out of it.

I use the penny test. As said before, they wear fast towards the end. The piece of mind that comes with new tires is priceless.

I replace both front and rear at 4K miles.
The rear is usually a racing slick by then.

This is not a recommendation, just answering the question.

On my other bikes (all cruisers), I have replaced the rear tire when cords appeared. Past the wear bars, past when the center section was bald. Yes, I rode them in the rain like that too and didn't crash, burn and immediately explode. I monitored closely and as soon as all the wearable rubber was gone, the bike was parked until a new tire was shod.

I won't be doing that with the LT. Just too heavy to ride like a dirt tracker. :bmw:

I change a lot of peoples tires that are to the cords.

There is almost no rubber between the road and the wheel.
I just laugh and shake my head.

On another note.
I usually have tire stacked by the road to go to the dump...
So stunters always take them.
I haven't had to pay dumping fees in years.
The tires I place by the road are spent.

Tejas Dept of Public Safety administers the vehicle safety inspection program, to include motorcycles in the description of 'vehicles' requiring the annual inspection. They specify as a failure, and I quote:

h. Any tire without tread wear indicators worn so that less than 2/32 (1/16) of an inch of tread design depth remains when measured (with a tread depth gauge) at the lowest points in any two adjacent major grooves in the center or middle of the tire.

NC has inspections, also...
However, as for now most people ignore it.

In a few months they will be computerized.
Then? A few will change their ways.
