Does anyone have a quick list of what mirrors are compatible with the stock handlebars on an '08 R12RT? I know I've read that some of the GS mirrors are, but I can't seem to find much in doing searches (my forum searching ability is sorely lacking). I don't mind the stock mirrors so much on the bike, especially since I added a couple small "blindspot" mirrors to the points that normally showed my hands, but when I'm loaded up with luggage, I end up with almost no visibility due to their low positioning. I figured I'd start watching eBay and online classifieds for some cheap mirrors to throw on there, even if only for traveling.
Also, if anyone knows of any aftermarket ones that fit, that'd be fine too. Nothing says I have to go BMW brand.

From a post on BMWST forums, the following appear to be compatible with the R12RT:
R1150GS
K1200RS
R1200ST
Anyone have any others?

You can use the standard handlebar mirror from BMW . The GS and old R models and others are all the same part. NO right or left hand they are all the same part. It cost 60 bucks each at both dealers I talked with so I bought them from the one who gives ten percent off for BMOA members.
You need to know though that you have to ream the bottom hole on the left housing and it takes only a tiniest bit of reaming. almost doesn't need any.
There is a special lock nut that goes on the end that passes through the housing that cost seven bucks apiece as well. I found two lock washers the right dimension at a hardware store for six cents . The lockwasher goes inside the housing on the shave as you push it through the two vertical holes already in the housing that comes with the RT. It is a perfect fit as the same housing that was on the older R's is what is on the current RT's depending on what options you have.
\
I can not stress enough when you ream out the left side ( the right side already fits perfect) do not take off much at all and dont try reaming it from the top you will booger up the housing ( BTW they run about 300 bucks )
Now after you get the left side to allow the mirror shaft to drop through remove the shaft and place the lockwasher on the end before the threads .
Push both shafts (stems whatever) through both holes and secure the locking nut on the bottom side with the torx wrench supplied in your tool kit.
IF you have the new el cheapo tool kit buy the optional one you will need it from time to time. It's all in the name of weight saving specs so don't blame BMW for trying to cheat you on tool kits. HA
Now you have mirrors that wont take your eyes from the road to see . When you need to see behind you more clearly you can always look down on the mirrors in the fairing as they don't vibrate as much. Also while I was at it I took some safety wire and wired my body mirrors inside the mount since if a rock hits them on the road they will be gone from the bike otherwise or broken when they hit the road at high speed so this is a good time to take care of that issue as well.
I love the mirrors in traffic and on the road they help to see around your passenger as well.
Good luck , here is a pic of mine.

I did the same as Ray (Stixx) and put the GS mirrors on my '07 RT. The bottom of hole on the left hand side did need a little reaming. Just take a drill that just fits down in the hole, push it forward toward the front of the bike and and turn it a couple of times. The lip that needs to be reamed off is on the rider side of the handlebars.
The BMW mirrors are rather expensive, about $160 for the pair. I read a thread somewhere (here? or Luxury touring forum?) where very inexpensive $15/pr) mirrors from JC Whitney will fit with simple modification. Don't know much more than that.

GaelI've been reading posts on both forums, and it seems any standard 10mm mirror would work successfully, you'd just have to tap the holes on the bars to the appropriate thread size. Doesn't sound like too bad of a job to save some cash.

I've used the Saeng Quick Scans on my LT for the past eight years.
Easy to install.
Infinitely adjustable.
Excellent lateral visibility.

The mirrors from the K1200RS fit into the open slots on the bars. They are a nice addition and improve the rear sightlines tremendously!
AS Cycles carries them: mirrors 51167653773 (rt. & lt.) $84.63 each, nut 51162328287 $10.68 each, washer 51162309607 $0.38 each for $191.38.

FW IW. At Blue Moon BMW I paid sixty apiece for the mirrors less ten percent for BMWOA and the nuts were seven bucks after discount . The lockwashers that go inside the housing along with the shave can be bought at ACE Hardware for six cents each. Again be careful not to "over" ream the left side hole as it is barely too small and the washer will not seat well if you take off too much. Just ask me cuz I did . I have to keep an eye on it now for loosening. That's why I overemphasized the err or the side of caution when reaming the left side hole. You could almost do it enough with a fingernail file. LOL
