A week ago I had 6000 mile service and the EWS ring replaced. I rode 1500 miles on a five day trip with no problems. Today I decided to go top off the tank. I rode 8 miles on the freeway then hit the exit ramp. I never got gas. As I slowed the bike started sputtering like it was missing. I could start it but it would sputter and not run. After several tries the bike would turn over but not start. I saw no outward signs of a problem. The thing is just wierd. I had to call BMW assist and have the bike towed in to the dealership.
Do the symptoms sound like anything anyone else had happen to them? Any idea what the problem might be? The bike now has 7500 miles on it.
Thanks

tough to call that one. Could be fuel pump, pencil coil etc...

Is the gas tank getting vented. I've had this problem in the past on other bikes when the vent line was pinched and not letting air into the tank. This can be proven by opening the gas tank which will let air in and seeing if your bike can run .. if so then find the vent hose if not I guess the mechs will have to get involved.

A friend of mine had a similar experience while on an Iron Butt rally and it must have been bad gas as he filled the tank with fresh gas and it was fine.

This happened to me last week on my way to work. I left home with a quarter tank showing on the RID and 126km left to go. The bike died after about 10km. It would turn over but not start. Opened the gas cap to see if there was any gas, it looked empty. Luckily I was across the street from a filling station. Pushed the bike over and put some gas in. It started right up.
Moral: Don't trust your gas gage. I have an appointment at the dealer to get the fuel level sensor re-calibrated.

On my 2006 RT if I fill the tank to the tippy top, it sputters and will not run well (seems like it's fuel starved). Must be ridden for a good 15 minutes or so before it goes back to normal, so I just don't fill it to the brim and its fine.
Hope this helps,
Michael

Problem solved. Turns out the fuel pump/fuel pump software died. The dealer had a new fuel pump sent over from Germany. Bike runs good now. I think this was unusual for a new BMW with 7500 miles on it.
