I currently run the Direcway High Speed system. Due to severe weather, I killed the electricity to all of the computer computer components. Everything works but my email. Two days now I have tried to access my regular email account and the following pops up:

"Your POP3 server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond? 'Wait' 'Stop'"
"Please review the list of errors below for details." No errors show up.

It just sits there and looks at me. When I tried to call customer service, I could not understand what they were saying. I believe it is outsourced to India. I asked for someone who could speak fluent English without such a heavy accent to no avail.

I unplugged the CPU for 15 minutes and again for three hours but nothing seems to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you running Microsoft Outlook, or Express, or something else. If you are running Microsoft, you may wish to go to your control panel and add/remove Outlook and re-install it via the wizard. Be sure you know the answers to the questions before you do this.

Good luck!

Also, could be a dns problem or your pop3 server is down.
If using outlook express check the [tools] [accounts] menu look under the [mail] tab and show the [properties] of your mail account. Then check the [servers] tab and verify your pop3 server is entered. You can ping the "pop3" server from the command prompt c:> type ping yourpop3servername it should return a value. If you get host unknown or request time out, then you have a network connection problem and you should call your ISP support for help. Let us know if you get any further info.

Thanks John and Michael for trying to help. I still have no results but I keep getting an error message of 0x800ccc19. I have tried to access the error codes with no success. Any idea what that error message means? If I can decipher that one, maybe therein lies the key.

Thanks again.

First, an assumption - your PC's ethernet connection is configured to use DHCP and it's working correctly.

Click on:

Start > Run > type in 'cmd' > click OK
This will bring up a 'DOS' box. At the command prompt, type in:
ipconfig and hit the enter key - short hand is: At the prompt, type in: ipconfig <enter>

That'll return a bunch of information - line we care about says something like:

Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 (that number may well be and likely is different on your system)

If there's nothing there - note that, and get back in here with that info - ignor the rest. If you've a gateway IP addy, continue on:

Next thing is to 'Ping' that IP addy - at the command prompt in the DOS box, type in:

ping 1921.68.0.1 (use the numbers you got for YOUR system!)

What we care about here is wether or not you see something like:

Reply from 192.168.0.1 <yada, yada, yada>

If you're getting replies - then your PC is talking to your gateway device (also likely your DHCP server), it's NIC is OK and the TCP/IP settings are correct.

Get that much done - tell us what you have or what dosen't jive and we'll go from there.

Good luck!

(yea, I do this stuff all day long, every day - phones and in person. Joy.)

Larry, were you able to ping your pop3 server? or did it time out?

One thing I just found out--by accident of course. If I completely disable my Norton Internet Security system, then I can receive and send emails. Once enabled, then error 0x800cc19 occurs. I disabled Norton acgain once again and the same malfunction happened. Do I somehow need to repair the Norton Anti-virus deal?

Sounds to me like Norton is shutting down Port 25. See if you can poke around in the Norton preferences and allow access to Port 25...or similar.

What would you recommend for anti-virus software on a home PC, Tate?

Kinda hard to beat Grisoft's AVG - Free Edition.

http://free.grisoft.com - as a start point if you wanna read about it.

http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_371a669.exe direct link to download.

Free download, free to use, regular updates - seemingly daily, detection rates that match or excede many of the more costly options, both incoming and outgoing email and attachement scans. Don't know if it's still true or not, but at one time, AVG was one of the better spyware defenses as well.

Grisoft's pro version also works well in an Enterprise environment. Centralized management, push install, etc. And - the price is very reasonable.

I 2nd Zotter.

I was having problems with Norton on one of my systems so I replaced it at renewal time with Grisoft's AVG free edition (now on 3 systems) and have had no problems since.

I have been using Norton products since the '70s, started with Norton Commander for DOS. That was so darned good I have been using them ever since. Did have some issues in the early 90's after Symantec took over, but have had Norton SystemWorks Pro now for the past few years, no issues with it at all. I do make sure to keep it up to date though.

I would never say it is the "best", but has worked very well for me.

I'm going to be the third one to chime in here for AVG. I've put it on the boys' machine and they haven't been hit yet while I've been hit once with Corporate Edition Norton.

Besides, Kim Komando (http://www.komando.com/) rates it high on her list of shareware programs. Left side Kim's Shareware and then Check out Kim's Best Shareware Picks.

I'll also go with AVG recomendation. Fixed things that Norton could not.

Ref. your other problem. If you are on a network unplug your router for a few minutes. This corrects same problem for me. No idea why.

Dave's right - back "in the day" when Peter Norton ran his own show, his products set the standard others could only hope for. Excellent stuff.

Then Symantec bought out not only the product line, but his name as well. That's when the 'bean counters' or "User Interface" design team - someone - got involved and stuff went downhill, fast. When the stuff works, it works as advertised. But, when it breaks or something weird happens, it can get real ugly.

All I can say is thank god for Microsoft. I make my live'n cleaning up after the problems folks have while using their products.

Norton's products on Windows products is the only setup I've seen where removing one from the other destroys basic functions of the other. Not always or even often - but I've seen it happen enough that I no longer trust 'em. But, like all things, choice is good.

Run Linux and then why would you need AV software? LOL

Just as a side note about the need for AV software. In my laboratory last semester I ran 30 configured Windows Server 2003 EE boxes without AV software, hooked to the Internet for 16 weeks with active student use, and not a one virii sniffle. LOTS of spyware on the boxes running IE.

Yes there was a firewall, and yes the boxes were still addressable from the Internet.

Currently I use Mcaffee AV software on my XP laptops and Apple Laptops since I get perpetual licenses for free.

I appreciate the help for everyone but things are still jammed up. The latest error now says port 110. I will try to add it one more time if I can remember how I reached it the first time.

I will fight it another five or six hours and after that Norton will be deleted and replaced by something else.

Customer service at Norton? Jeez, I wish you could have been here. Until now, it has been a really good system and I believe would still be fine if I had not unplugged everything when the storms hit.

Thanks so much to everybody.

For the past three years Norton SystemWorks Pro has cost me practically nothing. I just watch for the sales, and usually get it with two rebates making the cost nothing. Of course I do have to shell out the $89 up front, but get both a $50 and $39 rebate. Fry's Electronics seems to run that sale every year. Watching now for the 2006 version to see if it is going to be available for a fourth straight year.

It is not just the Norton AV, but all the other utilities in the SystemWorks package I like. I am using Norton Ghost to keep my hard drive backed up to a secondary drive. That saved my bacon once when I had a hard drive failure.

Hey Dick,

Now that was a great idea. (I would put one of those smiley faces there but I am computer "illegitimate" but I will learn one day.

Yep, I went outside to find the nearest 12 year old and when I asked for help he just looked at me and "mooed." :) The only thing near me way out in the countryside is about 150 cows, God bless'm. Come on down and we can have a grand barbecue. The owner wouldn't miss just one, fer sure.

However, I am stubborn and am determined to fix this thing. I am trying to do all the suggestions such as pinging, etc., but it takes time since I am trying to learn the procedures without screwing the whole thing up.

At the beginning I thought it was due to hooking up the Lexmark All-In-One but quickly realized that this happened before adding the new machine.

Wanna know just how computer dumb I am???? I print all of my checks from the Quicken program, hit print, and what a mess. Instead of printing on my HP 4+ all of the checks went through the Lexmark. What a mess!!

Once again, I really appreciate everyone's help. It means a lot.

When I figure out this bad boy, I will post the fix hoping it will help someone else. Then, that sucker will be deleted.

Thanks again, everyone.

Because 110 is the port POP runs on. If you want to receive email via POP you will have to make sure that port 110/tcp is open OUTGOING.

Also if you want to SEND email you more than likely need port 25/tcp open again OUTGOING.

EDIT: as an alternative: All those problems are exactly the reason why we offer the email service to our members. You might want to look into our email offering.
