Need to upgrade BMW Nav I

I've been trying to find a workable solution to upgrading my BMW Navigator I to something faster and that does not use memory cards. So far I have not had much luck. I think I remember reading in a post somewhere that the 2730 will work with the 2002 BMW Com II system which came in my LTE, but requires modification to the cable. BMW of ATL told me the Nav III system will not work with my bike. Everyone I ask says that there is not a cable available that will allow the 2820 or Nav III to connect to my Com System. It appears that I have to buy a new bike or a new Com System. Do any of you electronic wizards out there know what I can do or how to do it or know an electronic shop that will do it for me?

I just went with the Zumo 550.

BTW, I just replaced my 2720, which was just fine -- I just wanted the Zumo. You can find refurb 2720s for about $400. The 2720 is the basic GPS with a 2.5mm audio out, no XM, no Bluetooth, and still has the touch interface of the newer Garmins. I think Darrel at TVNAV has refurb 2720s. I'd sell you mine, but I've promised it to someone else.

Jeff, does the 2720 use the same cable as the BMW Nav I. My cable has a round plug which plugs into the left top side and another 2.5mm plug which plugs into the right lower back side of the GPS as you look at it from the front. Will this same cable work with the 2720 and 2730? Does the 2720 use memory cards?

No, it uses a different cable (it's more of a blade style connector than the round plug style). What sucks is that the Zumo even uses a different cable than that. :D

It does not use any flash cards, and all the memory is internal. The 2720 is just like the 28xx series, but no bluetooth, no XM. Bare bones version of the 28xx. Even the same connectors.

The 2720 will most definitely get you over the limitations of the Nav I. It worked for me for 3 years, and it should work well for the next owner for several more.

BTW, you can get the Nav III for your bike and connect it your Com II if you have an available audio in. The Nav III is a dumbed down, overpriced Zumo 550 anyway, so I'd go with the 550 if you go that direction.

Thanks, Jeff. Looks like a major tupperware removal no matter what. I just hope connecting the new cable is straight forward and it comes with detailed installation instructions.

I put a 2720 on mine and wired it to the map light for power, works great no need to take all the fairings off just lift out the light and fit a spade terminal on the power wire and earth it.. it will take longer to mount the unit.no memory card and same cable as 26## 27## and 28##

Doc, I have a newly overhauled 2720 and purchased it for around 240 last year from Ebay. At the time, it had the latest version V8. Unit has worked fine.

You may want to also try getfeetwet.com for good deals on GPS units.

I just mounted (2nd LT) another 2720 that I bought ($150 dollars) from Amazon.com. It is a "new overhauled" (Garmin words) unit put out by the oem Garmin with 2008 dvd for Mapsource and Maps (North American NT). It includes ALL the support equipment and unlock code plus the Garmin 1 year warrantee. Shipping is included in that 150 dollars. You probably know these units have "Text-to-speech" and 3 D nav plus very fast screen rewrites and high pixel screen res. There is not one blemish anywhere on any piece of equipment received............ every piece looks absolutely new.

I used a Radio Shack "isolation transformer" on the existing audio on the FRS cable and then both the 2 way radio UHF/FRS audio and the new Garmin audio co-exist very well. (AutoCom Pro M-1 intercom)

I've written the above to let you know just about any combination is doable. Audio cabling can be done by many riders/ shops and I would think your own BMW shop would offer (or maybe some of the tech riders will step up to the plate for you). Even the "uniqueness" of the BMW/ Garmin series can be worked around too. Is there a tech session coming up in your area? Volunteers?

Thanks for the information, Carl. I'm thinking that I will probably go with the 2720 on my 2002 LT until I get a new bike. I'm going to try to find someone around here who has installed the cable for the 2720 to the BMW Com II system and see if they will help me. I imagine the BMW Dealer will charge big bucks.

I found a factory refurbished 2720 for $285.00 at GetFeetWet Navigation. Comes with all auto attachments, 1 year warranty from Garmin and 3 year extended warranty (4 years total). Sounds pretty good to me. I'll order the cable, but will probably need someone to help me install it, unless I can get detailed instructions with pictures from someone.

Hey, I resemble that statement. I just need a little guidance or very good instructions. I've have the bike completely apart several times and have had the stingray off twice. I never taken the stingray apart and really don't know where everything hooks into it. I've disconnected the cables and reconnected them, but didn't really know what some one the where for. I don't know where the GPS cable goes or how it's connected to my bike. I guess if I change to the 2720, I'll just trace the GPS cable back from the Nav I, see where it goes and how it hooks into the Comm. If the 2720 cable hooks up the same at the Nav I, then I'm probably OK. If not, :eek:. Then I guess I'm gonna have to ask my ole buddy Steve to make a trip to Columbus to bale me out! :histerica:
