I had the same thing happen to me at Roebling Road in 1988. My 600 Katana had front brake failure at the end of the long front straight. Rear brake, zero help. Off the track into the run off area at about 130 mph. Had to get off and I ended up in front of the bike somehow. I hit the tire wall first and had enough sense to try and burrow as much as possible under the stack of tires, just when my bike sailed over my head, hit the tire wall, and landed on top of me. I'd say that was about as close to death as I've ever been.

That GP guy didn't have time to do squat, just plain lucky.

I can tell you it is a near death experience, because I was in the stands outside turn 1 at Pocono when a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him in 1989. He hit the tires first and his bike hit him dead on. Saw the whole thing, very devastating. He never had a chance. In his case the tire wall was still on the pavement, therefore the bike slid very evenly and didn't bounce as on grass.
