Does anyone ride with a dog?

I have a LT and a boxer (dog not engine) and was wondering if anyone has a good safe way to bring a dog along. He sure loves the cage I know he'd love the bike. I just wanna know if there is a safe way.

Not sure how big your Boxer is but a company called "Road Hound" makes pet carries for motor cycles. Was looking at them but our doggy was to big. From memory I think the largest size was for dogs around 15" high at the shoulders and 20 some odd pounds.

Check out Road Hound...about $300 bucks for a well designed crate plus mounting hardware (seat or luggage rack). T-Bags makes a soft carrier but I think your boxer may be too large....dimensions = 18.25" wide (interior), x 12" High x 9" deep.....recommended fo 20LB or less capacity.... about $180..........lsd

Check the laws in your state, too. I recently read about how several states have, or are considering, laws that require you to restrain pets for safety reasons. The people pushing for the laws are cite increased accident rates for distracted drivers with dogs in their laps, similar to cell phone issues. The way some of the (proposed?) laws are written, you wouldn't be allowed to take your dog on your motorcycle.

We sometimes take our 10 lb. dog in a kennel. I have a Fort Worth rack that mounts in place of the trunk and I strap a standard plastic kennel to that rack. Without the Fort Worth rack, perhaps you could insert some eyelets or hooks into the trunk bolt receptacles to strap to.

My kennel has plexiglass rivited to the inside to stop the wind from howling through, he can breath fine through the metal door on the end.

He loves it and it turns a lot of heads. The kids in cages love it!

My parents used to have their dog-about a 20 pounder ride on the tank. They were told that they could get a ticket but they never did. To do that though you need a dog with good balance. I had a small one that I tried to get to ride on the tank, she liked it but she fell off a couple of times so I got her a kennel to use on the luggage rack. She did not like that so I just put her and the dogs since in the kennel. It is safer and easier for both the dog and rider than taking one along even though the rider and dog can have fun.

I saw a man with a Goldwing that was taking a Pomeranian out of his saddlebag the other day. Even if the dog would fit I wouldn't think they would like that. At least it would be pretty safe on the highway.

Road Hound is too small. Sugar Ray Robinson should top out around 100 pounds or so. He's 60 pounds now at only 8 months old. Side car looks like the best option but that's a lot of bucks. I might take off the top box and see if I can fit a cage on there. If that option comes around I'll post pix.

You could also modify a bike trailer. If you took the top off, I think a boxer would fit quite well.

We take two Yorkies with us . They are 12 year old brothers , & ride in the sidecar with my wife . We did have three , there mother , but we lost her to old age last year .

We road with a Shihtzu, she road in a tank bag, 14 years and 59k.

Only problems we had ,her head would cover the speedo and picture takers would take there hands off the wheel to take one. In weather I would zip her in the bag.

I strapped my 2 miniature pinchers in their pet carrier to the back of my ZX11 a few times. My one dog Stella loved riding with me on my ATV and the jetski, she would sit in front of me and had good balance. It was a lot easier holding on to her on those, than going 80 on the Ninja! :D

I don't know how safe this one is but the dog is about the size of a Boxer so judge for yourself. Sometimes we forget how resilient animals are. We can ride on the back of bike what makes us think a dog can't do it without a box to contain it.

Having said that follow this link to one such dog and You tube is full of other vids of various size mutts doing their thing with pals on their bike. Personally I get on my bike to get away from dogs ,cats , and other predators and just ride by my lonesome, but to each his own. LOL

I have this mental pickture of taking out your poodle from the saddle bag in the summer all limp and steamed to death. yikes.

I can't really picture a boxer on a bike the way the tank rider doggy did it for two reasons. First they all seem kind of hyper ( my daughter's as well ) and the front legs on a boxer are very wide and the keep them spread out and anchored all the time in almost ever thing they do. Kinda like a giraffe. I'm picturing all the scrathes on the tank covers. Seems to me I saw a harley guy who rode his German Shepherd in back of him and he just sat on the seat but then that was a harley no great cornering G"s to deal with.

Seems like it is all about what size dog you got and how flexible he would be and someone else mentioned balance.

If you had a small enough dog for a top box and fabricate a fold back lid for it you could do that till the rain came. Dogs love to have wind in the face.

I dunno either just thinking out loud. LOL

We have a standard Schnauzer that like to ride with us in his WAGS trailer. I have heard that there is a new dog crate designed into a three wheel conversion for the LT, but haven't seen it yet.

We looked a a number of options, didn't want the extra 60# up high, and didn't like the feel of a sidecar. So the trailer was the best option for us.

Here in Portugal one guy has also a "riding 2 dogs system".
