Get one from a dealer and no garauntee it won't happen again.

To make sure, drop by Home Depot and pick up a 4" piano hinge and fix it permanently.

Before I took over my LT from my Dad, he fixed the hinge with 2 little pieces of copper wire......works like a champ.

This is my repair from 2 weeks ago, I've jsut used a couple of cable ties right now until I can get a few nice little nuts and bolts, but it works. Took about 30 minutes.

I broke mine putting two full face helmets and not laying them forward .I have not seen a post with any mention as to how the hinge got broken .I did mine in and fixed it with a small nail .

After mine broke by just riding and not using the mirror at all, warranty paid for it, but the dealer said BMW would only pay that warranty once. So, I have just used an unsightly piece of duct tape to keep the latch closed while riding. 28K miles later, no problem. I rarely go into that mirror anyway and it is out of sight. No big deal, and it seems to work.

That is the same thing my dealer told me. I will replace it once under warranty. Luckily, I have not had a problem since (over 7 years).

I wouldn't make the guy pay for it. It was going to break soon anyway. I used a piece of hinge (spring loaded no less) and some 3/32" pop rivets to install it. Works great and looks almost factory (painted it black with the spray on rubberized coating).

My mirror hinge broke on the ride home last night. This is my first "characteristic" LT failure and at only 13,000 miles. I called the dealer about a warranty replacement as the bike is only two years old. I was told that this was likely broken by overstuffing the trunk and a replacement was a judgement call they had to make once they saw it. My trunk was empty and the break was in the downward direction, not upward. The mirror part didn't break, but rather the "lower" part that held the round pins of the hinge. I had the little packet of manuals in it and it appears the downward weight was just too much for the chintzy plastic. I don't think it was an "overstuffing" issue, but we will see what they say when they look at it.

You would think a $21K bike would be a little better made. I also had the tehter bolt fail last year. I'm pretty sure it was stripped during assembly as I opened the trunk one day and found the plastic "bolt" laying in the bottom of the trunk. The dealer offered to replace it, but I found a metal bolt of the right size and rafted the plastic knob from the original onto it and it looks almost like the original, but much more robust.

A drill, heavy coat hanger, and JB Weld, has lasted 35,000.

Skip the duct tape. Have some pride in the machine and replace the pieces. I have a 2005 LT. I contacted Chicago BMW and ordered both the mirror and the lower piece which holds the hinges in place. It is easy to install--5 screws. I had them delivered to Seattle and with shipping it was around 45.00. Chicago gives a discount on parts.

I was able to re-attach the broken hinge parts with abs cement then filed it to fit
It's held up fine. I'm sure it broke because I filled the trunk too full and something was pressing too hard against it.

I had just read your post when I went to open my trunk lid and, lo & behold, found that my mirror was laying in the bottom of the trunk. What has broken isn't the part of the hinge that has the pins but, rather, the piece that is attached to the interior of the lid. The piece that holds the hinge pins. I called my dealer, Cliff's Cycle Revolution, and he has it in stock. You can probably get this from your local BMW dealer but, if not, called this number in Brookfield, CT.:

My first break was covered by the dealer. The Tech said it was a weak design, but you could help avoid the problem by using two hands to open it--one on the catch and the other down in the hinge area to guide it open in an arc rather than a yank out. Worked for about 50k miles.

When it broke again, black duct tape did the fix and is nearly invisible.

I used a length of 75# monofilament stretched between the 2 mounting screws. A stainless leader might work better.
