When I am looking at the temp gauge am I looking at the temp of the engine oil, the engine itself or what? What temp do these engines normally run at? In other words, when the gauge is in the middle, how many degrees is that? How many degrees is it when the gauge is at the top?

Do these bikes have any type of thermostat or does the oil go to the heat exchanger no matter what?

Just bought a shiny new 2008 R1200GSA last week. Dropped it trying some slow speed turns and broke my collar bone. Now the bike (with 321 miles on it) is sitting in my garage while I ask questions on the computer and generate new bone tissue. Such is life.

The oil temp bargraph is a oil temp bargraph.
There is an oil cooler mounted under the headlight.

It is my understanding that there is a thermostat valve in the cooler.

Thus, the recomendation to get the bike up to operating temp, then shut-off, put on side stand for 5 minutes (To drain out of the cooler), then the center stand for a few minutes, before checking oil level.

I'm sure other more knowledgable folks can chime in with the exacts if needed.

My GS and RT both ran/run in the middle of the guage.

Any idea how the bar graph translates into degrees? Being familiar with water cooled engines, I am curious what temp "hot" or "normal" actually is on these engines.

Sorry to hear about your accident. It sucks having that bike sitting there waiting on you to ride it.

Thanks for the thought. I got lucky... the orthopedic surgeon I consulted is a BMW rider also. He told me that he thinks everything will heal just fine. Good thing.... I was going to go sit on the bike for the next six weeks with my hands on the grips just to make sure the bone healed in the correct position.

SORRY FOR YOUR FALL BUT THAT IS THE RULE OF THIS GAME... IF YOU RIDE YOU CAN FALL... NO RIDE NO FALL...

I HOPE YOU GET UP FAST AND WELL RECOVERED TO SET OUT ON YOUR BRAND NEW GSA AND CLOCK UP MANY MORE MILES..

REF YOUR TEMP I WOULD NOT WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT IT THAT IS THE BEAUTY IF THIS ENGINE .... IT CAN TAKE THE HEAT VERY WELL AS I DID THIS SUMMER RUNNING 5 HRS NON STOP (OK A WC/DRINK STOP HERE AND THERE) AT 40C/44C THROUGH MID ARGENTINA.. THE TEMP GAGE SHOWED NO PROBLEM AT ALL. MY OIL CONSUMPTION WAS NO PROBLEM AS WELL. HERE DUE TO THE GRAVEL ROADS MANY OF US PROTECT THE RADIATOR WITH A SLIT COVER TO STOP STONES DAMAGING THE RADIATOR.

GOOD LUCK !! :bmw:
