Bruce Peninsula ?

We are planning to ride the north shore of the great lakes on the way to CCR. Someone suggested the Bruce Peninsula and the ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth for the geologic features and roads to be found on the peninsula.

Please comment on this route versus just staying on terra firma and the north road around Lake Huron. We were originally planning of CN route 17 all the way.
