Hello all : To get the best out of my new GSA I would like to get some advise on how or what is the best way to break in a new BMW 1200 GSA engine.

what revs and how to spread the rev increase.

For how long and what not to do ...

tks all :bmw:

I have always followed this method (file://localhost/Travel/Motorcycle/break_in_secrets.htm) even before it was shown to me.

Warm it up, then run the engine in hard, under load. You want to seat the rings. That takes load. Not speed, load. Hills can help.

Don't be gentle!! :D

Using the 600 mile service as the break in completion target, this is what I did that resulted in a smooth running engine that does not use oil on both the '07 RT and the '08 GS A.

I left the dealership and headed for a highway into the mountains. In every gear I would roll on the power and rev to 4k and release and let it fall back to 3k, then back to 4k. I was continously changing the engine rpms. After 200 miles, I changed the range from 3k to include one in ten bursts to 5k. The last 200 miles ranged to 6k. The last 50 miles had run ups to redline. In all cases, these were not full open throttle swings.

It worked for me. :)

What revs and how to spread the rev increase.

I just follow the BMW recommendations in the manual.

I keep the revs within limits, I vary the revs, I shift through the gears (no constant speed riding) and I load the engine by accelerating (but no full throttle stuff).

And I don't follow Motoman's method.

Che!! Vas a andar por las pampas, que bueno. Espero que evites los cortes de ruta si vuelven a pasar, aunque ahora podes ir por los caminos de tierra.
Congratulations (felicitaciones)
Sorry for the spanish, but I'm from Argentina as well, living in the US now.

Run it HARD but the key is the compression. The last three engines I have broken in this way (My 07LT, 05 Dodge Hemi, 07 Toyota 3.4ltr)

The engine must be at operating temperature and make sure you have room and GUN IT! right to redline right to top gear (be safe of course) then let the engine compress all the way down thru the gears as you shift down. This where the magic happens. The best is to do this on the drive home from the dealer. If you do this in the first 50km you are set!

All three engines run oil change to oil change without burning any oil and the oil is still clean when I change it!!

Then you are done and you can ride it like you stole it from then on.

Ahhhhhhhhh, mi querida Cordoba, mi querido pais.
Yeah, I know all about it, I have family and friends in Cordoba, Bs As, Chaco, and listen to the radio, and watch the news everyday. So sad.
Hmmmmmmmmm, Cordoba hills, world rally, bbq (asadito), nice memories.
Now you'll be able to see the real Dakar bikes in January, I hope to make it, and see the KTM's in action, that's my next bike.
Con salud, como decia mi viejo!!!

Wow, that's the first time I hear that!! Everybody advise to avoid the redline as much as possible and be gentle with acceleration and downshifting, at least that's my experience with cars, and race cars engine rebuilts.

Years ago the tolerances for rings were very sloppy by todays standards. Everything is very tight. Read it here:

I have done this with 3 engines now with no problems and NO oil burn!
