Hey guys I need help adjusting intake valves. I have read Gunsmoke and I don't feel comfortable doing myself. SOOO i'm wondering if we could have a tech session here at my house in Newcastle WA. soon. Of course the bike is all apart and trying to take to the dealer and them getting to soon is a concern. Help please .

Say when and where Clayton & someone will come! Like me for instance, if no one else speaks up. Just need to check my calendar to make sure I am available whenever you want to do it.

Clayton,
I am hauling the boat out today. So, I will be prepping and painting the bottom all weekend and probably till monday or tuesday. Tues and wed I have doctor appointments. If all else fails I could try coaching you over the phone. The important thing is to put two small zip ties on the chain at each sprocket. And release the chain tension by using a drill bit thru the access hole on the front of the engine. I think it was a # 30 but verify per the gunsmoke procedure. Just take your time and do not force anything. It will be easier than you think.

Clayton,
I live in Federal Way and would love to be there when you do it. I have a Clymer and Paul's videos. I'm sure we could get through it. Then when I do mine I'll know how. I've not done it before but am very mechanical. Let me know when it happens. Cell 253-332-5893

Alright Clayton, its a date buddy! I should be up there NLT 10:00 AM Saturday so we can get them cams out and see what buckets you have for future reference as well as changing out the tight ones.
If anyone in that neck of the woods is interested in joining us it might be a good chance to share info as long as you have room in the garage.
I'll bring what buckets I have just in case we luck out on size. If not, we should be able to check the local shops up there for the right size as soon as we get the old ones out.
See ya saturday!

I wish I could join ya, but I'm getting ready to break ground on the new shop. I have the excavator coming in on Monday and I have to relocate my entire back yard sprinkler system. You are welcome to take my spare buckets up with you John. I don't have anything real thin, but you might be able to use them. Have fun!

Hey Clayton, that's what this list is all about buddy: sharing the info and helping each other.
As far as the buckets go Ernie, I have quit a few I'll be taking along, plus we should be able to pick up whatever we need from one of the shops up there. Tks for the offer though.
New shop huh? Some of us can only dream for now!

Well, we should have a couple more Valve adjusters/Cam removers up North now! Both Clayton and Bill are hereby deemed more than capable of tackling the task.
We managed to adjust every one of Clayton's Intakes which were all at .006" except one, which was at .005"! And one of the exhausts was a tight .010", so we changed that as well while we were in there.
The great news is that we were able to re-use all but four of the buckets by just moving them to other valves, and I luckily had three that were exactly what we needed, so we only had to purchase one bucket!
Now I gotta go see about trading those four for some smaller buckets for them to be useful!
Tks for the Pizza and Hot Wings along with the needed cool refreshments Clayton! Nice to meet your better half as well.
I got home ab out 6:30 this evening after the requisite Blizzard stop plus a couple of Rest Area stops to soak the T-Shirt in this heat!

It was a great learning session and I will feel a lot more comfortable diving into a valve adjustment tear down. Thanks for the training John. As for the stingray, it was a piece of cake, NOT, heck it was a pain for both Clayton and me but all of a sudden it just went into place. Clayton thanks for the beverages and food. It was my pleasure to come and give you John a hand so we'll have to do it again.
It was a hot one up here yesterday. When I went back to Clayton's the bike thermometer read 97 until I got on the freeway and then it dropped all the way down to 95. This weather is crazy. Almost takes the fun out of it.

I am glad all worked out well for you guys. I hope Dr John knows what he is doing, Since he trained you guys and several years ago myself. Thanks John. Are you guys complaining about working on your LT's in a nice shaded garage? You should have swung by my place. I spent the last 3 days sanding and painting the bottom of my boat. which was hauled out and placed on a BLACK tarp!!! It was hauled out at a marina on marine view drive, One of the best motorcycle roads in the western wa metropolis. So as I busted my butt and sweated away. I had to put up with hundreds of motorcycles cruising by. Thank god she goes splash tomorrow.

Brian -
I tried to send a blizzard your way, but I guess it didn't make it. It was hot on the Middle Fork of the Salmon too, but no DQs there. Just back today.

Clayton,
I hope your bike is running right now. I am finally done with my bottom paint. I had 6 guests on board for a 3 day tour.... It was great but i'm happy to be done with it. tommorrow is the last day of tall ships so I can have my marina back to normal. Let me know if you still need a hand.

Yes got the bike back together and running great now. After much trouble shoothing and just lots of rechecking every thing that was touched during the 12k service, the engine hesitation was caused by a corroded cylinder one plug wire. There was rust inside cap and when I plugged back on after replacing spark plugs it wasn't making good contact. Now I can breathe easy cause she's together and running fine.Took a twenty five mile ride so far but looking forward to getting out this weekend and put some miles on.
Glad to see the boat is all painted and back at home safe and sound. Looks great and sure must of been a lot of work.:histerica
