View Full Version : Interest in Fl July Tech Session?

Thinking about doing a tech session. My needs:

1. 24k service

Oil Change
Transmission/Final Drive Fluid Change
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Valve Check (hopefully in spec)
Clutch Fluid Change
Possible Brake Fluid Change (not quite sure what equipment I need)

2. Probably change front tire, maybe also rear

3. Might even wash it

Date will probably be Sat July 12, may change to Sat July 19. I plan on starting ~9:30/10:00. If you are interested in attending respond here. Also mention what you need done on your bike (if anything). I will have a HF tire changer and possibly a Marc Parnes balancer at that time as well. Again, the date may change or even get canceled so please keep that in mind.

I'm doing this in prep to my Wisconsin/UP/Niagara Falls/New England/Nova Scotia trip.

Directions and such can be found at this earlier tech session thread (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19596&highlight=tech+session) . My house is now on Google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=8418+SW+11th+Rd,+Gainesville,+FL+32607&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.421237,76.992187&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=addr) which will make directions much easier.

**edit**

I will have all the tools needed to do a 6k/12k/24k service, and some extra milk jugs for used oil. Anything else and you'll need to BYOT. Air compressor is available as well if you really want to torque something down :D or fill up your tires.

Cheers,

Hi Adam,

I'm a little south but will plan to be there if all of the planets stay in alignment..... I just did my three main fluids but should change the air and gas filters. I'll bring them with me in case there is time. I'm happy to assist where ever I can. I'll bring some basic tools and drinks......

I will also try to make it, if the stars stay in alignment.

Dave-

Did you need to do anything to your bike, or were you thinking about "slumming" it up with your GS :D ?

Either way, more than welcome.

I doubt It'll need anything at that point as I just did the 48,000 mile service.

I'll just help out and impart wisdom http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gifLOL

I've been thinking of drilling the "hole" but I'd better save that for a session in my garage with mechanics that know what they are doing. Hate to get stranded in Gainesville.. Unless there are some that REALLY know what they are doing!

I'd certainly like to join ya'll if for no other reason than to drink in all Dave's wisdom! :p Unfortunatly, I have an MSF class to teach on the 12th and the wife is scheduled for total knee replacement surgery on the 14th. Don't think she'll be ready for me to disapear for a day so soon after surgery. If anything changes and I can get away I'll let ya know.

Glad to have you if you can make it Lynn. Hope the wife's TKR goes well. As I mentioned in the OP, the day may change from 7/12 to 7/19. So keep checking.

Hi I am in Williston if on the 7/12 I can make it but on 7/19 have plans . Just need to look at how to take apart . Thanks Dan

We'll be able to get it apart no problem :D . Odds are good it'll be on 7/12, so enjoy the ride from Williston and I'll see you then!

Ordered the Marc Parnes balancer so that will be on hand, the HF tire changer is on back order but should have that by 7/12.

I will also have my new Russell seat (ships on 6/30) if anyone wants to check it out.

Enjoy the weekend and the last remaining Euro 08 quarterfinals.

You can use my garage...

The road test afterwards will be much more meaningful.

If it is on the 12th, I may be able to come down from SC. I want to watch - preparing to do my own 24M service in about 2 months. I have a Hannigan sidecar attached to my LT.

More than welcome to swing by if you're in the area :D . I'll be doing my 24k, but you should be able to see the important stuff by the time you get down.

Enjoy the ride,

Adam, I may try and make it too, especially if I get the trailer hitch installed before then. Then I get my electrical work done and maybe get Dragon to ride the LT one more time to get the trailer up a little father north.

Hi,

If you have it on July 19th I might ride down for it. Cannot make the 12th though.

Thanks,

Will try to make it if I can...depends on my schedule and wife's schedule (she won't want to ride 3-1/2 hours each way to see bike mtce); will probably not know for sure til after the 4th..by then you should have the date down.

browad
Jun 28th, 2008, 9:47 pm
90% sure that date will be July 12. I hear you about the ride Duane. Should still be plenty to do when you get there, at least a tire change :) .

The 12th may be do-able for us. The 19th we'll be diving in the Keys! WooHoo!!
Needed:
General knowledge of routine Maintenance like...... Fluid changes, valve adjusting, canister-removal(not sure I have one), throttle cable replacing, farkle connections, tire changing, etc.....
I would actually like someone to ride my bike and tell me if it needs anything else looked into. My rear shock is flat feeling and there is a wooble while cornering. Other wise I'm happy with the 46-52mpg!

browad
Jun 30th, 2008, 10:24 am
Sounds like a fun trip. We'll be doing fluids and a valve check (which I will need help with as well :) ), and playing with a tire changer. Should be able to figure out farkle questions and should be someone there who's done a throttle cable.

Not sure about your rear shock, but worse comes to worse can swap tires+rims with another bike for a test ride. Also a nice way to try different tires.

Cheers, and congrats to Spain!

we'll put this plan in motion and hope it is set for the 12th.

If anyone wants to change a tire you can use my tire changer (provided I get it in). At your own risk of course.

If you want to balance it no problem, just bring your own wheel weights. You can usually score some off Pep Boys or some other tire changing center.

Of course anyone is welcome to show up! I plan on trying to start my 24k at 10:00. Tear down will take awhile, so don't speed too badly on your way here.

Everyone ride safe, and we'll have a blast.

Hey Adam,
Just got my schedule for July and I have the 12th off so if nothing else changes I should be able to make your Tech Session. I'll add my name to the list. Is there anything that I can bring along Food, Drinks, tools, manuals?

Lynn-

Glad that you'll be able to show up. There's a Publix around the corner so don't worry about food and drinks (unless you've got something special). Should be fine on manuals, but if you have an 05+ BMW CD I'd love to look at it. Tools...perhaps the chain tensioner for the valve check?

Enjoy the ride,

The pin to hold the tensioner is in the package I mailed you.

Unfortunately my BMW Service CD is the older version. I do have the Clymer manual which is supposed to cover the 05 model. Can't vouch for it as I've not used it but I will bring it along in case someone want's to have a look at it. Sounds like Dan has you covered on the cam chain.

browad
Jul 3rd, 2008, 9:53 am
I've got the Clymer as well, so you can leave yours home. Although it says 05, it doesn't really cover the model changes. And yes, did find the very small cam tensioner pin. Little dink thing it is. Wonder if I can use a clevis pin as well?

Happy 4th to everyone.

Adam,

Looking forward to the wrenching Saturday. I've been away for several weeks on family matters and won't be doing any work on my bike, but will be there to watch, learn and maybe help a little........ See you'all in the morning.

Hi Adam,

I'm hoping to attend this Saturday. Don't need any work right now but would like to see what's involved in the 24k service.

Look forward to meeting everyone.

Date set for Sat June 12. Weather report says scattered thunderstorms and high of 89. Welcome to Florida.

I will be starting my 24k service at 10:00am. The initial teardown will take awhile, so do not speed too badly. My needs are:

24k Service
Oil Change
Tire Change
Battery Swap

Again, anyone is welcome to come. We'll have cold drinks and perhaps pizza or burgers, and also learn a bit about the bikes. See the OP for address and mapping link.

Enjoy the rest of the week, and I'll see you on Saturday.

Adam and crew,
I appologize for my absence. My Toyota Camry motor blow up on Friday. I still do not know the cause(timing belt?) but like they say in Nascar "I wanted to thank the team and my sponsors they worked real hard and had me a strong running car I feel we could of ran out front but something in the motor let go in my Home Depot Number 20 Joe Gibs Racing Toyota Camry. We'll regroup and be back next week".

I hope it went well. I'm sure it was more fun than what I was doing! Please keep me in mind if there is another Tech Session or even just a get together in the Florida area. I was looking forward to meeting all yall!

I had to scramble but have a replacement in the works. Looks like the old Camry commuter/beater(but had ice cold AC) did not make it to 200K miles. It sits with 194K. :( Lucky it is a popular car I think I have it sold for $500 as is mechanics special.

Adam,

Did you figure out what was making the noise?

browad
Jul 17th, 2008, 2:34 pm
Not yet. I had an issue remounting a tire and am waiting on tools. Should come in today, which means I can put miles. This may just be an "old" noise that I am re-hearing.

Either way, we'll see.

Got a No-Mar bar in yesterday and wrestled my new rear tire on. That is truly a two-person job. Tackling my front this afternoon.

jzeiler
Jul 18th, 2008, 11:14 am
Adam,

The front ain't no easier. I have not been sucessful with the bar and always end up using spoons and rim protectors.

browad
Jul 18th, 2008, 12:43 pm
Yeah...that's what I thought. I have not had luck using my dink 9" spoons, but using the No-Mar bar with two people has worked out. The second person helps stabilize the rim in the clamps and holds the tire from slipping. Lots of lube and grunts and the tire will go on.

Probably do a new thread with my tire changing thoughts at some point.

browad
Jul 18th, 2008, 5:24 pm
Got my new front Bridgestone on. A bit harder than the rear methinks. Although I was surprised with how easy it was to get off the axle. A car jack and a 2x4 is all you need. And a helper for re-mounting.

Bike feels MUCH better now. The old front Metzler was dead. As in D-E-D dead. Severe cupping with ~1mm of tread left. Tire from PO had upwards of 16k on it. It felt so much better, especially nimbler, that I though something was wrong with the steering dampener.

Cheers,
