What is the difference between the Metzeler ME 880 and the Metzeler ME 880 XXL?

Which one should I run?

XXL's are the tires you see on those ridiculous choppers with the giant fat rear tire.

What about just going back to the OEMs? I never ran them from "new". The OEMs on mine had to replaced when I got it. Good or bad miles from them?

And ONE more: What about leaving my Avon on the back and just changing the front?

120/70B17 M/C 58V Front
160/70B17 M/C 79V REINF. Rear

Change the B to R if you prefer radials. Most prefer bias.

Make sure you get the one with the heavy load rating cuz a loaded LT is heavy.

I have tried several different tires that were suggested from members on this site...

Remember each member assumes that the tire they have is the best for everyone who owns an LT and for every riding style globally on the LT.
Note: A$$-U-Me <= Exactly.

I am now sticking with the ME880 until something better comes along for my style and my road conditions.

I would like to see Continental make an LT tire.
I mounted their BMW RT tires last month and was impressed with the quality and strength of the sidewall and the tread pattern.
As of now they don't have a 160 rear.

I had Conti Road Attacks and Metzler Z6 on my R12RT's. The Conti's were my preference, by far....

all the best,

Mike

Conti Road Attack 120/70ZR17 "C"
Conti Road Attack 180/55ZR17 "C"
These have a VERY ridgid sidewall... VERY!
My tire machine like to have s___t when I got the tire half way on the bead.

I see they have a BMW GT tire now, also.
Conti Road Attack 120/70ZR-17 "Z" (BMW GT)

Now they need on with an "SR" like the old K-Mart brand crap tires that you could get 400,000 miles out of. Just don't try to stop in the rain. :histerica

I must add...

It is nice to see a company that is not afraid to cater to a specific brand.

Metzeler site
Recommended Minimum Tire Pressures (PSI)

ME880 Solo 2 Up Light 2 Up Heavy
Front 38-40 40-42 40-42
Rear 44-46 46-48 46-48

What are you finding as an optimum pressure for tire life and performance with the 880's"

General consensus here is 42F, 48R. Maybe 50R two up. At CCR T.J.Tennent from Bridgestone suggested 2 psi under the max pressure for solo, max pressure for two up.

Does anyone know if anyone from any of the tire manufacturers will be at CCR this year? If they are, I'm campin' out in that area and getting some questions answered...

TJ is pretty much right on with is recommendation of 2 up fully loaded you should use max pressure on the side wall. That would be 50R 42F for the ME880s. Reduce by 2 if not riding 2-up. I use 48R 42F from the wisdom and experience of this group used before TJ and pleased with the results. Most of my riding is 2 up and I don't reduce.
