View Full Version : PSI and compensating for air temp ?

I've been very diligently checking the air pressure on the tires with the LT ever since our way too close of a call with the RT we had for a couple of weeks, which dropped 20lbs in just two days of riding - and did not know it. I had been checking those tires every third or fifth day, since I got the bike, and never had a problem, prior to the trip.

The LT was left sitting for a few days, in the shade. We were going for a ride this week, early the next day, so I checked the tires. 56R, and 44F. So, I dropped the air to 42/50 - two up riding.

Wanting to make sure it was correct, I checked again the following morning before the ride, and now they were under considerably inflated. I have an excellent gage.

So, what's the deal?

The bike had not been driven for two days, and the tires were "cold", both times I checked. Only difference was day time temp of 87-90 in the shade, and 68 in the AM.

Just wondering at what point would I want to check these if I take the bike for a 2-3 day trip at some point?

Also curious if anyone has ever checked to see how high the PSI goes after driving the bike for 8 hrs or so in the heat of day?

I don't mind with the convenience of the compressor at the house, but would not be overly thrilled using the pump on the bike.

Thanks!

General rule is to check the tires in the coolest temps you will be riding in. Check tires when cold first thing in the morning. Do not deflate when the tires are warm.
