Sorry if this is the wrong location for this question, but are there any riders here who have made the trek from Denver to Steamboat Springs. I am thinking of taking a two-up ride with the boss (wife) over the 4th weekend. I live in Denver, but have never made that drive.
Just curious what the thoughts are for a first long distance (ok I know it it only about three hours) ride. If it turns out to be too much of an adventure we are going to Breckenridge.
And of course if anyone want to join us let me know.

It is a nice ride, I don't think it will be too much of an adventure. US40 between Kremmling and Steamboat is a pleasant ride. It is about 175 miles from our house in Aurora to Steamboat - it will be a little less for you. That is the route we have taken each time we traveled to Zermatt to work on the 2008 reunion. LL --- I've done the route hundreds of times. All great rides. You have three primary route options. Go through Estes Park and over Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park. Number 2. Take I70 to Highway 40 exit and go up through Winter Park and Granby or Number 3, take I 70 to Silverthorne then up along the Blue to Kremmling and over Rabbit Ears Pass into Steamboat. Rides are listed from longest to shortest with Trail Ridge requiring 4-5 hours, Winter Park Route 3 - 4 hours and Silverthorne about 3 hours since the 1st 75 miles is on the slab. PM me if you want more details. Great Rides all. Moot

Moot made three good suggestions. I also like to go thru the Poudre Canyon (14 out of Fort Collins) to Walden then over to 40 to Steamboat.
The only downside I can think of is that on a holiday weekend you'll want to get started early unless you like sitting in traffic...
I have been over all of the roads this season including Trailridge and they are all pretty clear. (Trailridge has the usual snow run off so be careful of ice in the early AM)
EDIT: Almost forgot - Steamboat has their annual hot air balloon festival the first or second weekend of July so you might want to start looking for rooms now if you plan on staying overnight

Has anyone done Trail Ridge in the last few days? I'm heading up to The Boat about 10:30 today and wondered about conditions? Did they get snow on Wednesday?

Ditto on the advance lodging comment. Triple Crown Softball is also in Steamboat over the 4th and takes a lot of rooms. Fireworks are at Howelson Hill (the original ski mountain downtown). Moot
