We have a cougar in the local area that my neighbor has seen several times on his 12 acres, about a mile from me. The latest sighting was a few weeks ago. We are a rural area of 6-20 acres lots, with homes on the ridge lines and lots of small canyons to hide in below. Haven't seen a cat in my canyon, but I sometimes carry a firearm if I'm down the hill by myself, or take the dog with me. My friend carries a .45 when he's working outside because the cat seems to like his place. It probably has plenty to eat and hasn't taken any domestic animals (or small children) that I'm aware of. I don't know what the county policy is towards the cats near people - I need to inquire about that.
Now if the cougar would only eat the feral cats breeding like flies under my numbskull neighbor's house across the road.
