View Full Version : Hoping for a tech session in central Minnesota

Hi there ...

I have some items on my 'to-do' list that need to be done sooner than later and I'm really hoping that someone near the Twin Cities can help me

Since I've gotten my beloved LT out for the year I've noticed an annoying clanking sound coming from the rear wheel whenever I go over a small pothole, manhole cover or line in the road - I've finally found that the noise will completely go away when I am using the rear brakes ...

I've searched on here and I'm fairly certain that my LT has developed "Cowbell syndrome" which is remedied by replacing the rear rotor and pads ... it's incredibly irritating and embarrassing to have that loud noise every time I ride over the slightest bump

Things that NEED to be done on my 2000 K12LTC

1. Rear brakes, including rotor and pads (I want to upgrade to the EBC rotor and pads)

2. Engine oil and filter change

3. Transmission and final drive fluid change

Things I would really, really like to do

4. Front brake pads (they seem fine, but I would like to do them at the same time as the rears)

5. Spark plugs and general tune up ... air filter, fuel filter etc.

6. Install HID low beam headlight

7. Install fog lights (most likely MotoLights on the calipers)

8. Do a canisterectomy

9. A general once-over by someone that really knows LT's and their problem areas

I am mechanically inclined and I have all the tools that I need to do these (unless there are some BMW-only specialty tools needed for any of this

I've had some serious health problems lately and I just can't do these things alone without terrible difficulty and a LOT of pain - but I'm more than willing to help wrench on other people's LT's (or any other bikes) as much as I can, and I'm also very willing to help out with buying parts/upgrades for other people's bikes for helping me with the labor on mine

I really love this LT and now I'm a hopeless BMW addict when it comes to bikes ... mine just needs a little TLC to be perfect and I'm really hoping I can get one or a few of the members here that live around the Twin Cities to help me out with this

So ... is there anyone in Central MN that wants to put together a tech-session? ... as I said, I'm willing to be generous with paying for other people's parts and goodies in exchange for helping me with this labor

I'm in Burnsville and I'll be happy to ride to anyone's place to do this as long as it's around the Twin Cities area ... can anyone help me out with this?

Chris

I'm in Shoreview and I'd be happy to lend a hand.I've done the oil change and final drive fluid.Done rear brakes but not the rotor yet. canisterectomy doesn't sound to difficult.Done lighting on my LT.Done fuel filter and air filter when I replaced my throttle cables.Have added a Power Commander and my next project is to install an Air/Fuel gauge.Just plan on everything taking twice as long as you think it should. Chris, I would be interested in a tech session. I would like to replace my rear rotor, but I do not know how. I am in Eden Prairie. Let me know when.

I'm in Iowa (Iowa City area) and if I don't get pushed down stream, I'd be interested in attending...if nothing else but to "supervise". I would like to get an autocom installed and possibly a canisterectomy.

Thank you so much ... I'm overjoyed that someone is willing and able to help me with these minor projects ... you have no idea how much this means to me, honestly

and I'm especially happy that rockmw55422 is planning on replacing the rear rotor as well ... doing two of them will make it go by a lot faster - please let me know if you're going to go with the EBC rear rotor (look it up on the forum search - it looks to be superior to the OEM stock rotor in every way) and I will see if they will give any discounts for more than one ... worse case scenario is that we get combined shipping and save some money that way

as far as the time it takes to do this work, I never rush something like this, especially on a bike, and I really take my time to make sure things are done the right way and then rechecked twice when the job is done and every bolt gets back to the correct hole without any left over parts

let's wait to see if anyone else wants to get in on this (I really hope they do) and then we will come up with a date and location (my garage is small, so unfortunately my place isn't ideal for working on multiple bikes) - but it isn't out of the question if there isn't another option

I've done professional level photography as a hobby for around 20 years, so I'll be bringing some camera gear and documenting all of the work that's done for tutorials or people's records or whatever

anyone else interested in a tech session in the Twin Cities area? ... c'mon, you know you want to!

I would be interested I am not from the twin cities area but my bike is. I could come on back out there.

I would like to do:

Canistorectomy
Oil change
tranny oil change
Final drive oil change (Possible seal leak)
Spark plug change
Replace the lining of the chain tensioning rail, chain guide rail and thrust piece (Not sure what this is, it was on the maintenance schedule)

My bike is due for the 36,000 mile service,

I am near Rochester and would be willing to help if it is a day that works.

I have done most of these items but on my new bike I most likely will not need to do them again until this fall or next year. Let me know the date, time and location and I will try and be there.

I wish I would have seen this thread a month ago. Great to see others helping out. I just got my HIDs in and love the low beam and the high beaem still needs some work but.

A Power Commander? For the LT??? I was told by the manufacturer there were no plans to make one for the LT. Tell me more.

The Power Commander for the K1200 RS will work on the LT.For some reason it has a glitch and you occasionally have to give it a little throttle at start up.Not a big deal in my opinion after years of pumping away on a S&S Super G accelerator pump to get a stroker fired up. Jeff

Anyone have any ideas on dates or places yet?

I am starting my maintenace this weekend. I am at 36,800 miles. I have been averaging 1000 miles a week so I need to get it done. I would still be interested in coming to help if another session happens. I will be doing the throttle cable upgrade and rest of the service next weekend. I had to order the throttle cables. I am changing the engine oil and trans oil this week end and the rest next. I live near Green Bay if anyone is interested in helping or working on their bike. I have plenty of room in the garage.

If anyone get's this set-up and I can fit it into my schedule, I'll try to stop by.

(labor day and the following weekend's are for sure already booked, but otherwise most sat mornings would work)

So far I've done my own 6K and 12K's (only needed to check the valves - no bucket changes needed), added some lighting, replace front brake pads, and finished a full clutch job (leaking slave cylinder contaminated the clutch plate)about 3 or 4 weeks ago.
