My throttle cable snapped on my way home yesterday. Luckily I was only about a 1/2 mile away so I idled (limped) it back. I was impressed, it pulled some descent hills without chugging. Anyway, I've read a few threads on how to do it and am going to give it a try. While I'm in there, I will replace my air filter, O2 sensor and spark plugs. Is there anything else I should do while it's open? I have a 2002 LTC with 32,000 miles.

Hi, Scott - glad you were close to home when the throttle cable snapped. Ole Toad wuz about 600 miles out from my fav dealer when the throttle became really, really hard to twist. Brought ole Toad on home; back then there wuz a TSB on throttle cable replacement under warranty (since expired); and when changing out the cables, mechanic showed me that there wuz ONE strand left out of the five or six, or howevermany at the time, and we were workin' on it!!!
If you're gonna pull the fuel tank, you might run the tank close to empty so the weight won't be bad; do the fuel filter (inside the tank) while you're doing the air filter; check your valves gaps since you'll be changing plugs (this will give you a baseline for future valve checks). I've never changed the O2 sensor on ole Toad - not because it's a bear to do (I hear it is), butt because ace mechanic said when it goes, it goes, and it's not a service check item in the maintenance schedule (see attached list you can use). There are other minor 'checks' you can do while you're servicing the bike, and they're usually on the maintenance lists.
Good luck with the service. Jump on here if you hit a snag or wanna verify anythang.

Make sure you get the newer style of cable. For '05 and later. It will require reworking the right lower handlebar cover. Much easier pull.
Look in the Hall Of Wisdom for part numbers.
