Hi guys.............Any suggestions what I should carry for emergency repairs on my trip to Tombstone Arizona in July? I hate to get stranded out there and no parts nearby. I am going to have the LT serviced before I leave.

As El Jeffe used to say (and still does, I imagine!) - his tool kit consists of a cell phone, a credit card, and an anonymous book from BMWMOA. And I carry a Red Cross emergency med kit, in addition!

Well Rocky, there is a lot to be said for Jeff's point of view. But, many of us carry a bit more. I carry tons. I guess I like to be prepared.
I might suggest, at a minimum you carry:
•Tire patch kit and way to inflate the tire
•Spare headlight bulb
•Basic tools - Pliers, hex set, screwdrivers, etc.
•Flashlight
•Water
I do most of my own maintenance and I carry ALL the tools I routinely work with except torque wrenches. I also carry some replacement parts.
•Shift linkage-short arm, long arm, ball
•Spare fuses and HID relay
After that it gets serious. So, I wouldn't worry too much. Also, don't carry anything that you can't work with yourself. If you're a good wrench then you know what the deal is. If you aren't, then do what Jeff does and carry a credit card and a cellphone!
Have a great trip! :D :D :D

Hey Rocky, nice to meet you last Saturday.
You do know we're having a tech session at my house this Saturday, right?
Bring it over and we'll really fix it for you.

It was good meeting all at Cheesy Janes. I am not sure I can make it to the Tech Review as I have something else going on Saturday. I carry all the tools and such as well as a tire repair kit. Is the shift linkage enough of a problem that I should go thru the expense of carrying the spares? I unfortunately have not received my anonymous list yet but I do have roadside service, cell phone and credit cards. I will not be traveling alone so I guess I will have things covered.

If you asked Bruce he would say an extra valve stem (ha ha). Just to fill you in we had a flat in route to the last RTE and never made it all because of a $5 part. Have a great trip.

Well Guys we finished our three day trip to Tombstone Arizona. 2000 miles in three days and the LT performed like a dream. One HD Roadking broke down in Van Horn, probably a bad lifter so we had I had to have a buddy of mine ride bitch on the LT. I weigh 260 lbs and now my buds weight of 230 lbs and 60 lbs of gear for a total passenger weight of 550lbs. I rode two up for over 1600 miles at speeds over averaging 100 mph. we rode 75 miles across the desert at over 130 mph (that is what the speedometer read so I am assuming there is some error in it, possibly as much as 10mph). Still that is hauling ass like a bat out of hell. My friends on Harleys were so impressed. the LT seemed to improve performance the faster we rode. If it were not for my injured shoulder (probably a torn rotator cuff and several torn muscles in my shoulder from our accident in April, I would ridden the twistys thru the new mexico and arizona mountains at a much higher rate of speed. Still I was averaging 60 mph on twistys I would have never attempted on my Kawasaki Nomad.
I received the new cap for the right hand mirror but even with help from this forum I could not figure how to remove the mirror so I used a epoxy glue to rig a temporary fix to get me thru this trip. I was disappointed in the level of service from Alamo BMW. I ordered the part monday two weeks ago and asked it be expedited since I needed it before the trip. I paid extra to have it expedited and then it was never ordered. I showed up two Saturdays back and found it was not ordered. They ordered it the following monday and had it overnited. They did deliver it but they did not apologize for the error and one individual was rude to both myself and my wife the entire time. I would have expected much more especially since it was their mistake.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should take my LT for the full 24,000 mile service? I would like to do it myself but I cannot put it on the center stand myself because of my shoulder and I do not have a lift for the LT. I would also like to get the new cap put on the right mirror as well.
Well I would like to say I am very happy with my choice of bike. I am attaching a few pics from our trip.

Good job on the trip, Rocky. I didn't git a call from ya, so I figgered all went well with the LT!!!
Sorry about Alamo BMW - not surprised at all tho. I avoid 'em, so no stress on me!! My fav dealership is Lone Star up in Austin. If you call for a 24K appointment, the service writer will usually figger up a close estimate (barring unforeseen situation during the wrenching) and either give you a call with the quote, or e-mail it to ya. She's pretty good at customer service according to coupla of the guyz in my 'hood.
If you don't let Lone Star do your 24K, we could do it at my casa (I gotta get my lift tuned up first, tho). Would normally do it at Grif's, butt I think he's pretty busy with that work thang. Just lemme know if there are convenient days versus non-convenient, and we'll try to talk to some of the folks around here into helping out. They're more likely to be available on week-ends.
Keep in touch, Rocky. And if you're not busy Satiday, there is that RTE up in Stephenville!! We can talk more about the 24K then!!

Along with the great advice that everyone has given I would recommend lots of H2O. I rode to Sierra Vista, AZ a couple of months ago and when you get to N Mexico it is a lot of miles between stations or stores. A nice ride though.
Tombstone was cool.

Yup, count me in if you do. We'll get three or four guys on it and knock it out in 4 hours or less. Just show up with bike and parts. 4 quarts 20W50 synthetic, 1 quart tranny synth, oil filter, oil filter cover gasket, crush washers (final drive fill/drain and tranny fill plug), air filter, fuel filter.
Dick, lemme know if you get a short cable for the lift so we can make it work again.
Rocky, glad you had a safe trip. That's some ass bustin' in 3 days!

Tombstone is a cool town. The former Marshall there was a friend of my dad's (yes, there really is still a Marshall there).

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help. I will work on getting the items together for the service. how difficult is it to replace the brake pads as well? The front brakes seem to grab a bit and have a score mark on the rotor.
any suggestions on the sythentic oil? I have Amsoil 20w/50W right now. I have already changed the rear drive at my last oil change but after a long hard ride do ya'll think we should go ahead and change it again? Is there any other choice locally to obtain the parts I need for the service other than Alamo BMW?
I unfortunately will be unable to attend this weekend because I have a family think at 5pm saturday. doubt I could make it back in time. My wife is up riding again so she will be coming along to the next RTE. By the way, what does RTE stand for?

Rocky - I'll ping ya by PM later today, with the info on parts and where to buy 'em for the service. We can also discuss possible dates, etc. And, I'm going to Lone Star BMW up in Austin one day next week, so can pick up the thangs we'll need for the service, if you want me to - you can reimburse me later.
I'll be busy this morning, butt later today, or this evening, check your PM inbox. RTE is Ride To Eat.

Rocky, brake pads are a piece of cake. Takes just a minute to swap them out.
