Just got back from my Euro trip on the K1200lt

Bike let me down every year when taken abroard and this trip was its final chance. I have had 5 FD rebuilds so bought myself a brand new FD this year.
So when a tight 80mph motorway exit wobbled the bike, I was a bit dubious. On the center stand the worst thing to find - a wobbly rear. BMW Germany was 3 miles away so popped it in. Innitial inspection showed oil from FD gator. My BRAND NEW FD??!!!
You can imagine what I was going to do with the bike when I got it home after this breakdown!
BUT, on closer inspection the oil was only a dribble and it was gear oil. The Pinion bolt had somehow come loose (I torqued that myself!) and once the pinion connections were replaced, the bike was perfect. I caught it in time, but have yet to change the FD oil to check.
My thinking is now, that maybe the pinion bolt has been the cause of all my rebuild woes and BMW UK have never bothered to replace the bolt (I only replaced one, not both when I put the new rear on).
I have been extreamly happy with the ride since that pit stop.
Only incedent was on the last day 100 miles from home. On a fill up I dropped the bike and pillion. Result, one bruised pillion elbow and a bust brake lever. Found to my amazement that the brake works fine with two inches of brake lever and two fingers, so managed to get home OK.

All I can say is WOW! Five fd's...holy crap. I sure hope you found the root cause of the problem by replacing the pinion bolt. Good luck!!
