Our company, on Friday - largest jump in oil price day - banded motorcycles for use on company business. Does anybody know of another company that does that.

Hello.
I have never heard of any other companies having the same policy or policy change.
Though I would be interested in their reasoning for it!
Maybe they only want to pay .45 cents per mile if you want to use more gas in a cage. That way you dont possibly make a profit by using your motorcycle. Though gas at 4 bucks+ a gallon i dont know if you could by bike either.
What about liability reasons?

Many companies restrict the use of motorcycles on company business. It's a liability thing.

Yes, and sadly an IMAGE thing too. I often get very odd comments, looks and treatment after showing up on a cycle! Pity... :(

Yes. Liability. Did you know that if you use your car for work, you must have extra insurance?
Don't question your insurance agent, unless you are willing to pay.
I could only imagine what they would say in a Trauma unit if I pulled in on a bike.
I usually don't tell people that I ride, unless they have the same common interests.
It is not unheard of for my customers to crash here when they want to ride in the mountains.

My employer has a similar policy, yet they allow us to fly small private airplanes on business trips. Go figure...

You don't clarify if they pay you to use your own vehicle for company business. Do they supply a company car, then they have a right to inform you not to use the bike...

Mine banned small aircraft last year. Guess I'll have to check on motorcycles.

I guess I got my last check, they pay 50.5 per miles. Last month I went to Kansas City for a job, I only had one day notice and pay $1300 for air, $175 for car and 32 for airport parking (two days). I had to go the next week and I took my bike (about 430 miles one way) and for three days it cost the company (to me) under $500, I guess they just want to pay more.

If they supply a rental or company car then they are within their rights. If nit you will have to read in your contract, but my feeling they cannot force you to use a personal vehicle you do not want to use. Easy statement here would be: My personal car is not reliable enough (or just plain: uses too much gas and I cannot possibly drive it for .505)

Great.. if we had an address we could write courteous letter suggesting it may not be very smart to ban us.

I flew private planes for several years, and believe me, motorcycles are FAR more dangerous!
In an airplane, one is very rarely endangered by another plane. On a motorcycle, you are within feet of drivers who may or may not have a clue. Also, most often when flying if you make a mistake you have quite a bit of time to overcome it. Most flying accidents are due to a succession of small mistakes which become a BIG one. You rarely have more than a second to overcome a mistake on a motorcycle, and sometimes less to try to overcome someone else's mistake.

And MSF calls out for the motorcyclist to have a strategy. Employing the Search, Evaluate, Execute strategy, as do we on bikes, I believe makes us safer that the average car driver.
I would not fly on a plane if riding the bike to the job site (8-hours or less) was being paid by the employer. Mine did it; in fact, the boss asked if I was riding or not. Still, cheaper for the company; about 1/2 the price of flying, renting, etc..

Seems like our company came out with a no motorcycle for company business policy a couple of years ago. I just assume the don't ask, don't tell posture. No way i can drive the Jeep at .505/mi and even break even. I guess it really doesn't matter anyway since they've pretty much banned travel for us now anyway.
On a sidenote, I work for a major telecommunications company. In the past they have frowned upon working remotely/at home. In my case, the systems I work on are in Dallas. I'm in San Antonio. Sounds like telecommuting to me - just from the office. I heard yesterday that they will be coming out with an official policy on telecommuting by the end of the 2nd qtr. From what I heard, I'll have to really justify (to the point of almost having to write a business case) why I need to telecommute.

After a semi-long but brief conversation with the true CEO of my employer, I got my wife...uh..I mean the CEO to allow the purchase and use of a motorcycle for company business.
I can't use the LT very often as the areas i have to go have too much non-asphalt material to ride the fat pig on. Sooooo.... I am actively searching for a new 08 KLR 650. My CPA stated that I could justify the use and the mileage for work since my big LT (Tahoe LT) gets about 12+/- mpg. The KLR about 50 +/-. several of my friends already have the 08 KLR and one other is trying to buy one with me, but we can't find any. He's over in California right now looking and we hope to close a deal tomorrow on 3 bikes. Oh.. I forgot to mention that the CEO decided that if I got a new bike, so did she. So a new TW 200 is going in the stable next to the KLR.
Since I drive around 30K miles a year, if I use the KLR for 10K miles, it pays for it's self in a year. And if they (The IRS, the liberals Gestapo unit) do question it, having the LT and my YZ, can show that I have other bikes for fun.
Anyway, the key here is to sleep with the decision maker so you can be authorized to get a bike. :bike: and if that doesn't work buy her one too ! :D

Seems to me that, like so many corporate policies, this must be driven by insurance companies. I'm not sure what my company policy is, but I do know that if I die while on company business, my life insurance pays out double.

If flying private aircraft is safer why do you have to pay a higher life insurance premium as you do with other "dangerous" hobbies like sky diving and Scuba but they do not mention motorcycling?? :)

Though gas at 4 bucks+ a gallon
Here in the UK, we DREAM of petrol at 4 bucks a gallon. Currently up somwhere around 11 or 12. Think it won't happen over there? well I hope not, but don't be too sure.
