Filled up with gas and the 07 GSA would not start. Looked at the dash and had a EWS errror.

The manual says it's about the security system.

Called a dealer and he said it was a EWS Ring failure and it had to come in to fix it. Also, at the same time to get software updated...

Any home fixes???

No home fixes. Lots of info if you search on EWS.

With all the talk and history of FD failures, the EWS issue seems to have eclipsed it already!

Any thought of having an EWS Poll area similar to the FD failure list?

This is one of my biggest reasons why I am going after an 1150 and not a 1200GS. Way too many people having this issue and the end result is leaving you stranded. I dont need to be on a trip out in the middle of nowhere and have that happen. Atleast a final drive failure gives a noise and will most likely let you limp before compelte failure. Well, atleast mine did when it went out.

I had a 1150 GSA.... Nice bike and simpler.

However, after spending 10 days on a new GS in Italy, I sold the 1150. 1200 just fits better, is lighter, and better for me.

To each his own poison.

I have a friend who traded his 03LT for a 08RT. He picked it up on Friday. Today at work I went to see it. He started it one time, shut it off, showed me how the top and side bags came off, and was going to start it again to show me the headlight. Well the display showed EWS. The bike has 109 miles on it. He was not a bit happy. The dealer told him to try to wiggle the key and wires, if that did not work to contact BMW roadside assistance. A hour later he was still trying to get through to them.

This is a hot thread on the Advrider board:

With over 2,000 posts and over 82,000 views since March, this looks like BMW screwed the pooch again and created another headache for us to deal with.

Final Drive, bad radios, spotty dealer network and now bad EWS!

Hondas are looking better all the time!

What's even worse is the EWS has addressed a non-problem. How many BMW motorcycles are hot wired? To steal a motorcycle, you throw it in the back of a pick up.

I now carry a spare ring antennae. Plug it in, put your spare key through it and start the bike. Of course, now that I carry it, I'll never need it.

Thats the funny part, it makes you wonder what the heck they were thinking. How many BMW's are ever stolen to begin with, let alone hot wired?

I think the legal eagles require all motor vehicles to have the lock out... I was told the Ducati would cost $3k to fix as you have to replace the whole CPU.!!

here's what BMW said so far...

If you want to read more than you ever wanted to know about EWS read this thread. Last page talks about recalls in a few European countries and OZ and Australia.

I think I've read all of the EWS links on the Adventure site. Sad that BMW hasn't issued a recall. I heard they have in Europe???

I was just talking to my dealer here in Tacoma Washington today. I am looking at a GS or GSA and asked about the EWS failure. He said BMW has issued a recall and they have parts to replace the problem part.
