Got my 2003 LT used (a relatively cheap way to see if I wanted to get back into touring bikes again) and I have grown to love the way the bike runs, rides and handles. However, while the Silver paint color is attractive, it would not have been my first choice as I'm pretty much a Red guy and I feel that Silver is not quite as visible as some other colors. Unfortunately, the cost of repainting the bike is prohibitive so my only choices are to a) sell it and get another LT of a different color or b) see if maybe some tasteful pinstripes would break the color up enough to make it palatable. The pinstriping still won't fix the visibility issue but I guess you can't have everything.

Has anyone out there had their LT pinstriped and if so, do you have any pictures that I might could look at to get an idea what the bike would look like. I think we probably have several good pinstripers in the Houston area but I'm looking for some food for thought.

I've looked through the archives and while there a couple of small examples, I can't find any pictures showing the whole bike.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi, Steve - Lone Star BMW in Austin has a pin-striped LT either for sale directly, or on consignment. Sometimes, they post pics of their 'for sale' inventory. You might look up their webpage and see if it is listed and pic'd. It's a dark blue LT. The pinstriping isn't my cup of tea, butt at least it'll give you an idea of what pinstripers can do with the LT's lines. Good luck.

Oh, yeah - and you might ping David Kinsey down in Santa Fe, TX (D.Kinsey) and he might have some archived pics of pinstriping. He paints bikes for a living, and has some awesome pics on his website. Might find sumpthin' there that would be complimentary to your bike.

Steve, do yourself a huge favor and get with David Kinsey here on the list as D. Kinsey. He is in Santa Fe and is the BEST at painting BMW's or any other bike and can not only paint it for you, but help you with your decisions on what to do with it. His phone number is (713) 545-1722. He is also VERY fair with all us boys here on the list. He can send you photos of some of his work. The man is incredible!!!

Thanks to all, I'll look and see what David can maybe come up with. The graphics are great on your bike Grif but I would probably want something a bit more conservative (I am an old fart after all) :) .

Dick,
I did find the bike at Lone Star. Not quite what I think I'm looking for but it does give me an idea or two.

Thanks again for all the great help.

I'll trade you a champaign for a silver...

Besides silver I don't like ANY of the LT colors. I don't remember who's it is but this orange paint looks nice, and noticable. If I were to repaint mine I'd go with something bright, like the one on the right though. The photo doesn't do it any justice at all, when you see it in person it glows.

Here are some pictures of my pinstriped LT. I took most of it off with acetone, didn't hurt the factory paint. Moral of the story is, don't drink tequila shots with the pinstriper while he works... All I told him before he started was, "Think old school..."

I agree, I think it's simply due to BMW's uber conservative culture. I would LOVE to re-do by black LT in THIS color when the time comes:

I have been wanting to do that myself, especially since I have a vinyl cutter at my home office and some hundred different pincribing files to cut out...I just have to choose the right color for an Impala Brown 03 LTe

What do you think...black and white ?

I have a friend that have an 99 LT with orange metalic paint (he paint his bike with same color as his work van, every time) so I could try to get a picture of that one, maybe next wednesday (the one after this one) and show how he did it. He also painted the mirrors.

Pinstripes can make it more visible if they are retro-reflective, like from Streetglo.net

That is probably more like what I am looking for. Something different but not too much (I am a conservative old fart after all). However, the pinstriping may have to wait as I experienced the dreaded clutch slipping over the weekend. So now I need to tear the old girl down to replace the clutch and while I'm there, all the seals and the slave cylinder. Not looking forward to it not so much because of the amount of work, (with is a lot) but here in the Houston area it' almost too hot to work in the garage for very long at a stretch (re: the old fart problem). So it looks like I have a nice summer project. I've looked though the archives and picked up as much as I can in handy hints so it's just a matter of diving in and doing it. While on this subject, are there any "must have" special tools? I've got a pretty good selection of "standard" tools but before I start, I need to make sure I have all the bases covered.

Thanks again to all for the paint suggestions and wish me luck on the clutch.

Ping "Dick" Dick Largen he just did his clutch and a bunch of other stuff, he would be a good resource for a tool list. It took him only about 8 month to complete the job. :histerica

As far as your "old fart" comment goes, you can't be a much older fart than Grif :)

One thing you might do to save the cost of painting is to find another that is of a color that you like and swap panels and then sell the one with the silver panels.. Once you change the registration and resell it it won't matter to the DMV.. and you may have a color that you like..

In fact you might be able to do it at almost no cost if you buy the second one right. The only thing is you will have to upfront the cost of the other LT. You should be able to get a 99 - 04 as they all use the same body panels.
