Some of you recall that ole Toad wuz on the Handy Lift from last August until recently. Stripped nekkid and having all kinds of maintenance and farkle bits done. Lotsa thangs kept me from doing all the work in one fellswoop. Finally started to button thangs up coupla weeks ago, and Monte sez, let's see it start first!! Good move - no start. Called in reinforcement (Dave Moore, an EE) who sez starter is toast. Drug ole Toad to Hank's place and sure enuf - outfitted with a new starter. Back home to finish putting ole Toad back together. Did, and after finishing most of the work, took a ride to the Hill Country with my good friend Monte - mainly to make sure all we did wuz good to go. The next day, after a warm up ride for the fluids, we set out to change 'em. Did good on the engine oil, butt the rear drive puked a leetle bitsy piece of metal during the drain process. Oh oh - whazzup with this?!

Concensus - take it to Hank. Couldn't, cuz ole Blue Truck went to the shop for some major work to keep running. 286,000 miles, and first time in the OR!! Anyway, got ole Blue Truck back yestiday and hauled ole Toad to Hank's place for a looksee at the rear drive.

Found where the bitsy metal piece came from, and got a new bearing installed, along with a tapered roller bearing that exhibited some spalling and age wear. See attachments for pics. Much thanks to Hank for the one day turn around - he had nine bikes on the floor and somehow managed to squeeze ole Toad in.

I forgot to ask how many balls in this bearing (prolly 19), butt I think the one that went south had 17, as it wuz a 2003 replacement (under goodwill warranty at 70K, by BMWNA).

Maybe Ol Toad's bearings corroded to lack of use?

Don't tell Cheryl, butt I think ole Toad is prolly gonna outcost ole Blue Truck!! Damn starter wuz $550 + Hank's major labor. No idea what the rear drive is gonna be. At's ok, cuz I got farkle money left over that I don't need!

Hey, BTW - you doin' any good selling yours? I haven't checked around to see where all you've got it advertised. Aww - go ahead and buy that black LT 'fore it gets away. Can always part out the '99!!! :D

Good luck, Wolfgang. See you and Emily soon, I hope.

No serious offers on selling my 99 including the nifty trailer for 10k even. Our Puerto Rican adventure has put a strain on the finances, so two bikes is not really an option. I hate to sell the trailer, but since we will spend some time in the motor home in the next few years I like to get a trailer that carries more than just the bike. He is still holding that nice shinney black 2008 for me...

Sore in spots I don't even remember from years ago!!! Oh, wait - yeah I do!! It's just that them spots are a tad older and not as smoothe as before!! :o Guess I'll go ridin' Sunday and see if they'll limber up just a leetle! Hip dysplasia don't feel to many good!!

Hey, Jim - come on over and pick up the lift. You're welcome to it for a bit. Or better yet, just bring your scoot over here and we'll operate on it in Boerne.

BTW - for those interested. The current bearing (SKF manufacturer) went in with 19 balls, and the toasted one that came out had 17. So, back in '03 when the original bearing went south, 17 ball units were the shnitz as replacements. I figger it ran ~50K before throwin' in the towel.

The two swingarm pivot bearings were replaced this time - Hank showed 'em to me and they looked ready to retire. And the inner tapered bearing really looked worse (including the race surface) than the pictures showed. Glad to have new one. Bill wuz a tad over 500 bones (Edgar - don't think about it!!!) and surprised me - to the good! Also, back in '03, the bearing cost wuz $140 - this year (same part number, btw) it wuz $142!! Inflation is a choker!! :histerica

So, a round of :clapping: to Hank for the work; and another round to my good friend Monte for all his support and on-site help with wrenching, etc. And to my friends here on the forums who put me on the floor at times, with them quick leetle jabs and joke-of-the-day humor attempts!! :histerica Actually helped staving off the depression!!! :p

Cy'all on the road, with Toad.

Great news!

Where the heck have you bean?!?! Been kinda worried, what with the tornadic activity up yonder. I did hear from some of the folks up yonder - said you were ok and just taking a leave of absence from the list for a bit.

My Mom's place is sharing about 1,200 adjustor visits with the other folks in Baxter that got hit - baseball size hail, they say!! I'm still waitin' to hear from him. Hope you missed all of it?

Regarding the oil filters - you need to find an LT-owner friend who stock piles LT filters, then sells his LT and buys an FJR!! He'll give you all those stockpiles of filters if you give him that 'wet sparrow' look!!! Plus, he'll help ya change the oil - howz that for a bud?? ;) :)

Yeppir - Monte is on a sweet leetle FJR now. Absolutely loves it, and fits him to a tee. Proud of the fact that he has auto-tranny now!! Rubs it in now and then, too! Like today - he and I went to Hank's place to pick up ole Toad. I axed Monte if he wanted to ride ole Toad back to Boerne and I'll follow in ole Blue Truck. Looked at me and axed (with a sneer) "your bike have an auto-tranny? If not, I'll drive the truck"!!!! Sheesh, how soon they forgot, and how quick to rub!!! :)

Take care, Shawn - good to see ya back on the forums, Bud. Say "Hi, Teri" for me.

Sounds good, Jim. Just lemme know where and when. Gonna terrorize the Hill Country tamale (Sun), along with all those folks with their colors on, and no helmets!! Sheeesh. Must be a rally around these parts.

Seriously, Jim - ready when you are. Whatcha gonna be doin'? Right now, I have the lift at the casa - a leetle bit cooler there, cuz we got fans and insulation!! I'll keep it here 'til we have a plan. Chat with ya laters.

Mornin' Dan - great to see you yestiday. Had no idea in advance that you were after an IBA thangie. Looks like you made great time. 1026 miles in 17 hours; pretty good run in that heat and wind, including the 1/2 hour or so at World Kkaaffeee Hqtrs.

After *$$, Russ headed to the casa, and Monte and I rode over to the Bowling Alley for breakfast; then a 3-digit speed run to Luckenbach and watched all the chrome and 'really' loud pipe crowd. Later, a run into F'burg for some fine lunch outside on a patio just off Main. F'burg wuz real quiet, since they now have a 'no noise' statute on the books. Much more pleasant shopping and chatting on the sidewalks at the various storefronts; still watching the chrome crowd. I tell ya, that F'burg puts Boerne to shame when it comes to antique shops and the various historical venues.

Glad you had a safe run, Dan. No performance awards, I take it.

Hey, BTW - since Monte isn't sure he's gonna make it to the RTE, maybe we can get him to stand in as your 'second' at the San Antonio wedding that day - then you can join us at the RTE!!! Nah - didn't think so!! ;)

Take care - see ya soon. Oh - and btw - shoot me a PM with a price on those extra TPS sensors - I need to save up some pennies!

Hey, David - thanks for the well wishes on ole Toad. Rode like a champ yestiday.

As you prolly know, Dan is one smoothe rider (I've taken a coupla ERC classes with him and have benefitted just watching him finesse the courses). And a great route pre-planner - weather and the other 'distractions' included. Said he'd be here at 0700, and in he walks at 0700. Left Houston area at 3:40 ayem, and back home at 8:40 pee'm - bet he coulda told us when ETA to the casa wuz gonna be, barring distractions!! If I'd ever contemplate doing an IBA run, I'd like to do it as Dan's wingman. Wanna join up?? ;)

Hi Dave, went Houston-Ft.Stockton-Del Rio-Uvalde-San Antonio-Houston
I10 from Kerrville to Ft Stockton is 80mph, set it on 83 and passed everybody.
Traffic was very light. Crosswinds of 35-40 w/gusts to 60 made it interesting.
Del Rio's 20 or so stop lights at 95 deg made me miserable until I took off my jacket in Uvalde. Thought I was going to pass out. No more long rides without a Camelbak or similar. It was great of the 3 amigos to get up so early on a Sunday to have coffee with me. Dick doesn't understand that I park behind **$$ so that he can't see me park the beast. Of course mine was filthy and theirs were clean.

Bored mostly. Wanted to blow out the cobwebs. Had planned on going to the open house Saturday at Motohio. Woke up Friday at 3am, didn't get a good feeling and opted to do the SS1000 Sunday instead.

Yeah, didn't look too close at it though. 4 riders and 4 bikes,so Toad was one of the other 2 LT's there. Leaving Houston,I was anticipating kolaches in Schulenburg at one of my favorite bakeries. Kountry Bakery. Realized when I got there they are closed on Sundays. Oakridge Smokehouse, across the freeway and way down the list wasn't open yet. Had to settle for Buc-ees in Luling.

Dan,

I don't remember the name of the place, but as you head into Schulenburg south on 77, you go about 1/2 mile and just before you get to the curve and intersection of College Street there is a bakery on the east side of the road, that (used to be at least) open on Sunday and their stuff is great (great pies too that they will pack real well for you if you tell them you are riding...but don't ask how I know that ;) ). There is a great porch out front, drive through on the north side of the building and lots of parking behind it. I think the building is red...is this the Kountry Bakery? If so I will be disappointed they are no longer open on Sunday, cause that was my coffee stop when ever I came home from a weekend in San Antonio.

That's the place. I did not check their hours. There are 3 locations and the one in Hallettsville is not open on Sunday. As I exited the freeway,I realized it was Sunday and did not drive down there. I need to do more research.
Kathy and I stopped there on the way to the Driftwood RTE. I can still taste the dewberry/cream cheese kolaches.

Yeah, didn't look too close at it though. 4 riders and 4 bikes,so Toad was one of the other 2 LT's there.

One of the other LT's was an FJR, the othern was a KLR 650. Toad was the lone LT, cowering there like a freshman at the senior prom......naw, not really, Toad was reigning over all, resplenid wid his new rear end.....
