A member of another LT forum I read, tired of changing his front tire due to severe and fast cupping, tried a BT 21 on the front tire with a BT 20 on the rear.

He says the result is excellent, the front tire lasting nearly 3 times as long, with good grip all the way through and the bikes handling better than before.

Anyone else tried this combination ?.

I have used quite a few sets of BT020s and never experienced any cupping of the front. Now if the claim of the BT021 lasting 3 times longer is true it would mean a life span of 18 K miles for me with my riding style and conditions (I usually get about 6K miles on the front).
Now for a tire to last longer (3 times longer), it would also mean that the grip would be less - you either get grip OR high mileage, not both, unless I am missing something.
I guess I would take that claim with a grain of salt, as we all have a favorite brand of oil and tires...;)

I know I never got anywhere near 8,000 miles from a front 020. They did cup somewhat, but mostly, they just wore out. In my case, I think 5,000 miles or more on an 020 would have been considered a gift.

Just checked the BS web site and the front 021 - 120 70R 17 is listed as having the least amount of tread new of any tire listed on the 021 list. New it only shows 4/32 tread. I suspect the front 020 radial was similar.

Zippy,

If you get that sort of mileage without cupping you´re a better man than me.

Mine gives me about 10 to 12.000 Kms ( 6 to 8.000 miles ) but the cupping is severe.

Maybe the BT 21´s are harder.

Thought the BT21 was not rated for the LT.

The rear is not rated... the front is...
