Hi Jim,
I'm planning on riding there next Monday. When in January are you planning your trip?
Below is a GPS shot of part of my route. I'll post a report when I get back.

Can't wait for the report! Big Bend is at the top of my list - if I don't go to Spring Training Camp this year, then it is off to Big Bend (same roads you show in your screenshot) and then over to the Hill Country on my way back home.
I read in an old issue of Rider that 118 from the park to Alpine was a good road as well...

Be sure to stay on 118 past Alpine into Ft. Davis, then up into the Davis Mtns past the McDonald Observatory. Also make a loop ride out of 166 in this same area. Great riding!

Well it was a really nice trip to Big Bend. The weather was great especially for this time of year. The windy conditions were trying at times but it was a wonderful little trip.
Here is my photo album/report (http://www.dotski.com/motorcycle/bigbend/).

Thanks.
I use Photoshop for the graphics and Dreamweaver to create the HTML.

We left Albuquerque for Las Cruces. Spent the night and left for the park the next am. Very nice ride due to 60-70 deg weather we had. Took interstate 10 to Kent, Tx then 118 to Alpine, Tx and then 385 to the park. I just have to say, Wonderful views and asphalt to the national park. Imagine a national park over 100 miles from the nearest interstate. Not one car on the road for miles and miles and when you see one, they wave hello. We stayed at the Chisom lodge in the park. You would think the lodge would gouge your wallet for everything and that is not the case. The restaurant and food was great and reasonable prices too. Make reservations, for we had many people turned away at the desk and saw some sleeping in their cars overnight the next morning. The park roads are great within and lead to many awesome sites to see. Watch out for the deer, they are all over the place and exspecially by the lodge due to being feed by us two legged creatures. This place is a must see, we did 1400 mile round trip and would do it again in a heart beat. PS, Alpine Tx, (120 miles from park) is the last fair sized town into the park and they have everything you need. Fuel can be purchased at the park and is available until 6:00 pm. R/S JIM

gee, thanks. Normally I wait until spring to head out on a long ride. After checking out your site I have a serious urge to gas up and go now.

Hey Jim,
I'm so glad you were able to go on this trip. I had a wonderful time a couple of week ago on mine as you may have guess from my photo journal (http://www.dotski.com/motorcycle/bigbend/). I agree that at many times I felt like I owned the roads. Not a single car for miles an miles. And they DO indeed wave at you when you run across one every now and again. ;)
